Poo question!!

Beccaroll · 23/09/2003 18:19

Can I just describe my little ones poo and check all is as it should be!

He poos during every feed - it sounds rather explosive and is always nearly totally liquid - yellow or orange in colour with the odd few "bits".

Is this ok? Its the liquidness and quantity that worries me a little! Also his fontanelle seems very dipped in.

Im having a little crisis of confidence today - Im going through a very stressful family time at the moment and im just a little worried about things.

If you call NHS direct they will just say go to Casualty (they always do) and you will be there all night and it will be hideous and they will send you home after hours and hours of waiting. I'd say unless your ds is very listless and clearly ill to wait until tomorrow and go to your GP. I feel sure everything is just fine. My ds pooed during every single feed as a newborn - yes, even the night ones - which was hideous, but very normal. His were pretty much liquid too. I would strongly advise you not to go to Casualty as it will be awful, but if you are truly worried and panicky (no need IMO!) to call your HV or the hospital maternity unit where you had him instead if you are seriously worried. He sounds just like my son! And I remember the 'explosiveness' too! Take care of yourself.

That sounds exactly like both of my DSs early poos. Every feed, generally without fail, mustard up to the armpits.

The fontanelle always seems to dip in occasionally. It can be a sign of dehydration but if the nappies are weed in and they're certainly dirty then I'd bet your baby's fine. Both my DSs fontanelles generally filled out soon after a feed. I remember worrying unnecessarily about this too

WSM · 23/09/2003 21:45

DD's early poos were exactly the same She always seemed to push more out than we put in TBH ! Stick with it.

Bekki · 23/09/2003 23:55

Alex's are exactly the same. If hes weeing well and feeding well then he can't be dehydrated. I want to know if breastfed babies dirty nappies stay this runny. I can't really imagine a 6 month old with explosive runny nappies.

Heee heee - yup - totally normal.

My boy spent his first two weeks doing precisely this:

sleep-wakeup-feed-poo-wee-sleep-repeat

You won't really get proper turds until the bubba's on solids, so don't worry about the liquidness of it all, and yellow/orange is par for the course (it goes green maconium - yellow dioreahha (esp if yr b/feeding) - then finally brown turdy solids (you'll feel so proud)

So don't worry about it - he's almost certainly doing everything right, and as long as he's feeding enough he will be fine.

Remember ... no child will ever starve themselves..

Bekki, my seven month old's poos are still runny and explosive and whilst feeding. ON the plus side, still smell only slightly.

SoupDragon · 24/09/2003 07:55

Certainly at 4 months DS2s were still runny. Posh hotel, expensive suite, crisp white bed linen... I'll say no more.

When you get them on solids, you'll have the joy of seeing what colours they can produce - DS1 was great when he'd had a spinach meal followed later by a carrot one. Wonderful swirly pattern! LOL! I really need to get out more...

yep, normal as normal can be. I worried too with dd1, but have stopped with dd2.

bunnyrabbit · 26/09/2003 08:23

Do they have to poo everyday?

bobthebaby · 26/09/2003 08:48

No, some store it up for days (some nappy that must be!) My ds is down to 3 a day now at 7 months - cause for celebration in our house. Some wiser person than me will say how many days wait is okay, but as long as there are plenty of wet naps its okay. I think some babies just use every ounce of milk to grow and so there is nothing to poo out.

pupuce · 26/09/2003 14:56

BR - newborns need to poo and pee several times a day. If they don't it is a sign that they are not getting enough milk.
