Can I use expressed milk if I have thrush?

DD has thrush in her mouth. I don't think I have it, but in case I do, is my expressed breast milk safe to freeze for later?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

No, you can use it while you have it, but not once the infection has cleared. Not a stupid question at all!

RitaMorgan · 10/04/2011 16:54

If she has it you will probably have it too, even if you don't have symptoms. Cosmosis is right that the milk can reinfect you if you use it later.

Are you both being treated?

DD has Nystan - nasty stuff, makes her gag. I haven't got anything. My HV is rubbish.

Conversation went a bit like this:
Me: Do you think she's got thrush?
HV: [looks in mouth] Don't know, do you?
ME: Well, I thought so, that's why I'm asking.
HV: OK, I'll prescribe xxxx
SIL(happened to be there): I didn't find that as good as Nystan when DS had thrush.
HV: Oh well, I'll give you Nystan.

Hmm She didn't ask me if I had it, didn;t ask me anything actually! She is the crappiest, most can't-be-arsed person I've ever met. My HV when I has DS was FAB, so glad I had her first time round and not this useless one!

So should I be on something too? Is there any point in DD taking the nasty Nystan if I've I'm not taking anything?

There is a really useful leaflet about thrush, I'll see if I can find it and link it.

Cosmosis · 10/04/2011 17:53

here you go

SarahScot · 10/04/2011 19:01

Thank you Cosmosis.

I've just been and read the leaflet and am abslutely fuming at my HV. Am going to complain about her tomorrow. At best she's lazy, at worst she's dangerous. By only giving DD medicine and not me she's messing about with my baby's health and putting our breastfeeding at risk. I'm RAGING Angry

I found that Breastfeeding Network leaflet so useful when we had thrush - it's awful to get rid of if it's not treated properly. It might be worth double checking with someone else that your dd definitely does have it as it's sometimes confused with milk residue on the tongue - if she has spots on her lips or gums as well as tongue then it probably is though.

I was given nystatin first off for ds, but it didn't work (my HV actually said it normally didn't!) but daktarin oral gel cleared up his mouth really quickly. I had canestan for my nipples too - and watch out your dd doesn't get a thrush nappy rash too. Everything has to be treated simultaneously to get rid of it.

It's probably a good idea to print it off and take it to the docs, I know a few docs can be a bit odd about thrush.

My doctor gave me two rounds of Nystan which didn't help. She then told me that she didn't want DD to have anymore medicine and that it would 'clear on it's own'.

As it happened it has but at the time I felt so upset that she was happy to leave DD and also me with thrush!
