how much does what you eat alter breast milk?

only ask as DD has had very odd painful wind this morning - different to her normal style. she's also done an incredibly smelly poo just now (far more pong than normal) that just kept coming - 10 mins later I'm feeding her and she's still trumping/pooing away and I'm slightly Confused to change her nappy until she's finished Wink. this is definately differnt to her usual wind/explosive poos she gets so am wondering if it might be something I've eaten affecting her system through my breast milk - I made a big vegetable soup yesterday for my tea (trying to be healthy) and it's made me a bit gassy so mabe same for her? I've got left overs so am debating having some for lunch but don't want a repeat of all this painful wind for her again.

She did it 5 mins after we got in from our first shoping trip out together - thank goodness it wasn't when we were out Wink Shock

Personally I found no effect. I think things that get into your bloodstream get into your milk (caffeine, alcohol etc) but I'm not sure there's any hard evidence that foods that have an effect on your digestive system get into the milk and effect the baby the same way.

AngelDog · 08/04/2011 12:27

That shouldn't affect it. Some things can have an effect e.g. if your LO is allergic to something you've eaten (often dairy), or some sorts of additives, but studies have found very little effect from your diet.

Kellymom has more info.

Dd3 reacts like that when I eat lentils.

i don't believe that foods that make us gassy would affect the baby, as mentioned above it wouldn't get into your bloodstream.

I'm not sure if all the worry about what to eat came from some sort of misguided belief that what you eat is directly turned into milk. my MIL was Shock when i told her i wasn't going to restrict what i ate. (apart from not too much Wine)

things like caffeine and alcohol it makes sense, although i believe only tiny amounts can be found in the milk unless you drink loads!

Kellymom info will make more sense than this ramble Blush

Hey angels

It is pretty rare for your diet to cause your DD to be gassy and the prime suspect would be dairy as already mentioned. Here are some ideas on what could be causing the gas.

Hope everything else is going OK! I can't believe how big they are getting now...

Both mine reacted when I ate peas..... So avoided them. Also onions ( as in soup).
