Talk to me about green poos

I have a very windy 6 week old, who doesn't like to be put down (ok that's normal), will only sleep on my chest (that's normal too), wakes in pain frequently and will be very windy and cry until she's passed wind.

If you lie her on her back in her moses basket, she;ll wake within in a few minutes. Therefore she spends most of her nights sleeping on me, on in bed with us. I can't put her down in the day too. If she falls asleep in the pushchair, as soon as we've stopped moving, she'll start crying in her sleep and passing wind?!?!?

The problem is that she's so windy, she'll comfort feed because she's in pain, but like last night, I fed her about five times and it was incredibly hard to get her back to sleep - she was so windy, she was crying and no matter what I did, 'bicycling her legs', winding her for ages etc etc she was so uncomfortable.

It also results in green, explosive windy poos.

I'm taking her to the cranial osteopath, my HV said to only feed her from one side at each feeding, and if she wants to go feed within 2 hours to put her back on the same side - as it could be an oversupply issue. I wonder if it could be too, she's a hungry little thing with amazing weight gain and often will choke mid feed and have to come off as there is so much milk!

Any advice? I can't stand seeing her in pain.

You could try taking her off just after let down, letting it run into muslin and putting her back on when flow is slower? That worked for me, stopped the choking, clicking etc. :)

I have clicking too! Is that what that is?

Sounds very much like what my HV thought my little one might have - a lack of the enzymes for breaking down the lactose. You can get something called Coleif which breaks the lactose down for them. You can buy it OTC but it is about £14 apparently so might be worth going to the GP. #it is what we are trying next...

There's information here on green poo that you might find useful.

There is no evidence that cranial osteopathy is an effective treatment so you might be better off spending that money elsewhere... maybe on a relaxing massage to relieve some of your stress while someone babysits.

Have you tried infacol?

The clicking is her coming off the breast and going back on. Are you sore?

I had oversupply with DD1 which made her windy but which was settling down by this point. I did, when she was about 3 or 4 weeks old, end up giving her a dummy to help her go a little longer between feeds as the closer they were the more colicky she seemed. DD2 and I both had thrush and the green explosions went on for some time longer, so check your baby's mouth for white spots (thrush which can also cause the things your describe, although then I'd guess you might have symptoms as well).

Poor thing, they are so ruled by their digestive systems at this age, but it will pass and it will get better soon.

I have a fast-let down which sometimes leaves DD2 in a 'drink or drown' dilemma if I'm not careful Grin. There are a few positions you could try that would give your DD a bit more control over how much milk she gets and how fast, that might help. Pics are here.

Can the windyness be a symptom of thrush, too?

There are no white spots or coated tongue - I do get pains in my breast sometimes but to be honest I think thats because she feeds so much all the time. And the pains aren't that bad either, so unsure if it is thrush?

Thank you for all the information, I'll look it up.

If it is oversupply, will block feeding help it?

Also, shes just started feeding now and I took her off, but there was no milk spurting out? I latched her on properly but she started clicking again?

Let her feed on one breast until she's happy and she should be fine IMO. Are you getting engorged between feeds?

Clicking means the latch is getting broken for some reason. A shallow latch can affect the composition of the milk the baby gets as a deep latch is needed to properly stimulate the release of the fat molecules (this is what I was told by an infant feeding specialist). So it may be that your latch isn't as good as it good be - and this is causing the clicking, pain AND green poos.

Thanks Japhrimel, that's interesting to know. I'll be going to a breastfeeding drop-in this week and I'll chat to them then about it....

I hope it sorts it out, she is so grumpy I haven't been able to put her down :(
