Night engorgement - how long for?

DS (8 weeks) has been sleeping for 5-6 hours at a time at night for the last few days. Whilst I'm happy about this, unfortunately I'm awake wishing he would wake up after about 4 hours due to the engorgement! Is this normal, and how long is it likely to last for?

Yes I had this! By three months I'm sure it was less of a problem. By four or five months I really noticed my boobs not getting hard much at all. Still feeding at 9 months.

God I wish he would sleep for that long now...

You could express a bit to take the edge of - I found hand expressing easiest but it is a faff.

Thanks Albrecht, I hope it goes away soon!

DS2 is nearly 17wks and I have noticed an easing of the engorgement over the last few weeks so I'd say from around 3mths. Unfortunately, his sleep is not so good now!

Thanks Squitten, that seems like ages away!

I yearn for the days when I had this problem. Basically since 12 weeks, DS2 has rarely gone long enough for my breasts to be engorged. However on the rare night that he has a long sleep, it still happens; he's 5 months old. So I imagine if he started sleeping through on a regular basis I would have to express again in the night like before until my body adjusted supply? Albrecht, please don't say that, I am hoping for a miracle at 6 months! (don't know why, just have to have something to cling to!!)

I found that each time my little ones pushed through another couple of hours at night I'd feel uncomfortably engorged for 4 or 5 days before it settled down.

... I meant to add, but only if the new longer sleeping pattern was reliable and regular. Your body will adjust fairly quickly as long as it is a fairly stable predictable pattern.

I had this and had to pump, but I pumped a little less each night and stopped after about a week I think.

Kirisox · 01/04/2011 12:10

It seemed a little better last night, hopefully I can enjoy these sleeps before we go back to waking up at night!

Sorry CamperFan I bet yours will be different. We have had a lot of changes, moving house, illness that have unsettled him. You do need something to cling to, they will all sleep eventually.
