co sleeping with an 19m age gap

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 30/03/2011 10:42

I'd really appreciate others advice and experiences on this.

Dc two is due in sept, when ds will then be 19m.

At the moment i co sleep with ds who still feeds during the night (he had stopped for a few weeks but started again...i think related to starting walking so i'm hoping he might stop again now he's cracked that.)

I'm in no hurry to stop co sleeping or night feeds but am wondering weather it might be for the best to start doing this now, gentley, rather than in a rush later on...

Or can i just wait and see? This is my instinct at the moment.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Grin

My age gap is much bigger, but I slept with both dcs for about 4 months after ds2 was born. My main reason was because I had a broken ankle and couldn't easily get up for ds1 in the night, but in hindsight, it was the best thing we could have done for the family as a whole.

If it were me in your situation, I would just wait and see. You could put all the work into getting ds all night weaned only for him to desperately need it again once the new baby arrives.

congrats on your pregnancy Smile

EauRouge · 30/03/2011 13:56

There are 28 months between my DDs. DD1 was night-weaned at 19mo but still waking up a lot. I tried to get her to sleep in her own bed a when I was about 4 months pregnant with DD2. it was a gradual process, I slept in her bed in her room to get her used to it and it went fine to start with- she would wake up and come into our room at about 4am.

Things went backwards though and I was too knackered in late pregnancy to keep getting up and sorting her out so I gave up. I don't think my heart was really in it anyway! I felt the same as you, everyone told me it would be for the best etc but I don't think DD1 is ready to sleep on her own yet. She's also regressed with the night-weaning but that hasn't bothered me, I can't really con her with "booby's asleep" when DD2 is chowing down all night Grin

I would just wait and see. Congrats on your pregnancy :)

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 30/03/2011 14:10

Thanks mawbroon. Smile

I wouldn't really mind cosleeping with both. Though I think it's one of those things practiced world wide that the safe co sleeping guidelines don't approve of though...and that makes me a tad nervous.

I think you are right about not trying to night wean him yet though..
Thank you. Smile

x post! Thanks EauRouge. Lol at trying to convince dd1 booby's asleep with dd2 feeding! Grin

That very much chimes with what i was thinking. Thank you for sharing your experience.I think i'll just forget about it for the forseeable...they can change so much in a few months anyway can't they! Smile

You just need to sleep in the middle of the two of them, and then the fact that there are two of them in the bed is surely irrelevant seeing that they wouldn't actually be coming in contact with each other.

When you need to feed dc2 off the other breast, you can just roll a bit further over and feed from the "top" breast without physically re-arranging everybody in the bed!

EauRouge · 30/03/2011 14:29

Yes, what mawbroon said about sleeping with 2. I sleep in the C position around DD2 and DD1 usually snuggles up to my back. She normally only wants feeding once in the night and then a couple of times in the morning but at that point I can prop myself up on the pillows and feed them both at the same time.

Has anyone told you about this book yet?

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 30/03/2011 14:33

Yes i guess you're right mawbroon. All the sids stuff makes me a bit irrational nervous. Smile

Luckily i'm already pretty adept at any boob from any angle. [lazy emoticon]

Yes eaurouge, someone had mentioned that book to me (it may even have been you on a previous thread) but it was before i was pg and it felt like tempting fate to order it then. Thank you for the reminder, i'll definatly get on and order it now. Smile

Congratulations, Moonface! Grin

I'd wondered the same about co-sleeping with two DC myself, so it was useful to read the thread. Not that I'll have two that close together given that DS is 15 m.o. and my periods haven't returned yet.

crikeybadger · 30/03/2011 20:34

No advice whatsoever I'm afraid, but just wanted to say a big congratulations Moonface.

How exciting! Grin

Babieseverywhere · 30/03/2011 20:46

Congratulations :)

Like Mawbroon said you need to sleep between the baby and toddler and you shouldn't leave them both in bed together without you either.

AngelDog · 30/03/2011 20:54

Isn't it really uncomfortable feeding a newborn from the top breast? I manage it fine with my 15 m.o., but I'm not sure whether it'd be do-able for those really long newborn feeds.

Babieseverywhere · 30/03/2011 21:41

I think feeding off the top breast is fine with a newborn as long as the latch is alright. That said I don't go back to sleep feeding off the top breast and if I can get away with it I prefer to nurse off the bottom and sleep at the same time.

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 30/03/2011 21:58

Thanks Angeldog, Crikey and babieseverywhere. Grin
Angeldog i hope af returns soon (assuming that's what you want) Smile

Thanks, MFM - now DS is 15 m.o. it means I wouldn't end up with two under 2s so being able to TTC at some point in the nearish future wouldn't be bad! Wink As you can tell, I'm not very brave...

PogoBaby · 31/03/2011 00:24

Sorry for the post hi-jack, but those of you that co-sleep with 2, is DH/P always in another bed.

Co-sleep with DD and DH now and would quite happily co-sleep with DC2 as well (theoretical at the moment as still no periods due to breastfeeding) but wouldn't want to kick DH out of the bed.

Oh and congratulations Grin

Babieseverywhere · 31/03/2011 04:34

Pogobaby, Sometimes. When DH is in bed it goes...baby, me, toddler, him. We could also do baby, me, DH, toddler. But tonight he has been drinking so it is baby, me, toddler, big girl.

We have a double bed in the spare room and sometimes DH takes toddler to that bed, to give me a break especially if one or more if them are sick. Basically it is musical beds around here but I guess that its too be expected with three children for years and under. They are just so little, I guess it will calm down as they get older. Our four year old is usually in her own bed.

My MIL made a comment recently that she thought cosleeping was weird and how you would get no ' time with your husband'. But if the kids are sleeping somewhere we have time to cuddle else where, basically whatever gives us the most sleep...that says everyone is asleep in the house and I can't sleep...arghh.

Babieseverywhere · 31/03/2011 04:36

Three children four years and under.

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 31/03/2011 06:32

Fingers crossed forwnu Angeldog! Grin

I tentatively have one due in oct (first scan tomorrow) when DD will also be 19 months.

Let the adventure begin

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 31/03/2011 07:41

Hi penguinearmy (great name!) i have my fingers crossed for your scan! It can be nerve wracking can't it? I had an mc with my first pg, i never got to the point of a scan, so now i barely tell anyone in rl till i've seen that little black and white flutter.

Did or do you bf/co-keep with your dd? Hope you don't mind me asking... Smile

PogoBaby · 31/03/2011 12:24

In response to your MIL Babieseverywhere, DH and I are managing to have us time, we just go elsewhere whilst DD is in the bed!

PenguinArmy · 31/03/2011 19:37

I am still BF DD, mainly at night as I work ft.

We used to do a mix of co-sleeping and in the cot, but have found she won't sleep if in with us now, which is a shame as we're having some disturbed nights. In fact we can't settle her at all and have to go in lay her down, put dummy in and leave. She is very wired and any stimulation is too much.

Scan went fine thank you, and thankfully also there is only one baby, just beforehand had the thought of trying to tandem 3. Scary stuff

Babieseverywhere · 01/04/2011 14:13

Pogobaby, I must confess I just laughed and pointed out with three 'four years and under' children, we must find some time to be together. She was a bit Blush
Yeah PenguinArmy glad everything is looking alright and that there is only one baby :)
