Difference between Dr. Browns and B-Free bottles

These bottles are very similar though not the same and there is routine confusion over the exact differences, so I thought I'd write what I know in a post...

  1. Both bottles claim reduced colic, inner ear infections etc.

  2. The bottles and packaging look almost identical. I believe one company is a licensee of the other. There have been legal disputes between the two companies.

  3. People will sell them interchangeably (ie. you made order a Dr. Brown's bottle but receive a B-Free bottle, so if you have a preference double check exactly what you are buying !)

  4. Specific Differences (and this I believe varies from country to country, but in the UK...):

B-Free bottle is made from a honey-coloured plastic which is Bisphenol-A free. This is apparently good. (Dr. Brown's is clear)

B-Free bottle has a heat sensitive painted tip on the end of their vent tube (Dr. Brown's - at least the bottles I've bought in Boots, don't).

B-Free has one extra component - a small, slitted, silicon 'cap' which covers the vent resevoir (Dr. Brown's don't, their vent resevoir protusion is bare).

  1. I've tried both and found the B-Free bottles more effective at reducing air-in-the-milk (which makes for smoother feeds, less spit up, trapped gas etc. IMO).

You can see details about the B=Free bottles, and order with free next day p&p here

I can't find the manufacturer's home page for Dr. Brown's (do post if you know it), but there is information from their Hong Kong distributor here

The teats on both bottles feel, and look, the same to me. The stamping on the base of the teat (denoting brand / teat size) can be different. B-Free also sell latex as well as silicon teats; not sure about Dr. Brown's (teats should be interchangeable, though check the 'bottle width' as I have seen some Dr. Brown's bottles which are described as 'wide-mouth,' and some as 'standard').

HTH !

PS - The double-spacing in this post is down to tech, not me, LOL !

Darn, the double spacing is only in message preview, LOL.

Do they work? Do you know if they are better at preventing wind that Avents? Is there a difference between how effective they are with formula or ebm?

(thanks for your interesting post, by the way)

pinotgrigio · 28/10/2005 06:36

I used the Dr Brown's with my DD and they were brilliant. It solved all of our wind/colic problems. I used them with formula, EBM and the very thick formula for hungry babies.

Hi KK, we were talking about bottles here ... several of us found the Avent didn't work (ie. lots of sick up, more colicy baby etc.) but the B-Free / Dr. Brown's did.

I think it is also probably more noticeable with the youngest abies, when colic is worst (ie. 0 - about 10 weeks say).

i used bfree bottles since week 10, before dd was on avent anti-colic bottle, bt she developed colic late.
tbh it worked and was life saver, shes 6 and half month now but still on them.
i was quite upset on PP review they said its expensive and complicated. i know its fiddly but after all your child is first isnt it?
i have 2 bottles dr, brown they similar but they dont have blue valve, which hard to take travel, it leeks too much.
so i recommend bfree bottles, but bare in your mind some babies it works, and some dont.so if you really have colic baby its worth trying
you tell difference when you feed your baby, when dd was on avent there used too appear air bubbles in the milk, with bfree you can see those bubbles come thru the vent. i soppose its very simple common idea put to the bottle.

hub2dee · 28/10/2005 16:56

KK - just to answer your specific q: no difference in how they handle formula vs. EBM. We've used both in ours. HTH

I'm just about to order 6 bottles from the B free link but am unsure of a couple of things and wondered if anyone could help? Do you get teats with the bottles, and will the bottles fit in a conventional steam steriliser. (I've got the Tommee Tippee one) Any help would be gratefully received

BigBumpBonnie · 03/11/2005 14:49

bump!!

csa · 03/11/2005 15:37

bbb, i did with mine but they were the newborn slow flow ones. and yes, they fit my mothercare steam steriliser if that is any help

BigBumpBonnie · 03/11/2005 15:55

hi and thanks csa. Now ordered! Here's hoping for a good nights sleep

I have these three, after research and experience with them I can tell you about B free / DR browns / Born free:

B free - Innovate few patents to prevent colic, gas, vacuum, bobbles and help the baby to control the speed of feeding. Yes it has more parts but I am so happy that I found this product! make my family so happy and quit. I must add - good quality product!

Born free - same product B free except missing pipe that help the bobbles prevention (vacuum). born free license the patent from B free.

DR browns - Used B free similar patent of vacuum prevention.
I found lot of cons with Dr browns.

  1. cheap quality for expensive bottles
  2. teats make the baby spit the milk
  3. all their bottles leaking!

It's a shame that so difficult to find the B free, but if you find them - don't miss the opportunity!
