breast fed baby poo...

Realise in advance this is probably a daft question but first time mum so not sure what's normal. Up until a couple of days ago dd's poo has been pretty much what you'd expect from a breast fed baby - yellow, grainy and not overly smelly. Last couple of days it seems to be thicker in consistency, slightly darker and smells kinda like vinegar - she has also had less dirty nappies. Today things seem nearly back to how it was previously - she has had a bit of a cold but this cleared up 4/5 days ago. She's 6 weeks old. Does this seem ok or do you think she might have had a funny tummy - she has seemed fine and no sign of being unwell but just wandered why the change?! I've not eaten anything out of the ordinary, so don't think that's an issue.

oh it changes all the time! you'll have all colours of the rainbow and many different textures!

allhallows · 27/10/2005 22:06

don't worry. as long as poo's not black & tarry, she's fine.

moondog · 27/10/2005 22:06

Everything and anything is normal twiga.
You will be amazed (and irrationally preoccupied with) at the contents of nappies!!

Enjoy the inoffensive nature of it all. Poo only gets gross when they start of food or formula.

Twiga · 27/10/2005 22:11

Thanks all, figured it was probably all right but it is really yuky compared with what she was previously producing. Though I'd look less silly asking on here than mentioning it to the hv tomorrow - she's lovely but I always feel like I'm under a magnifying glass when she's here. You're right poo has def become a bit of an obsession in this house - what I want to know is how someone so small can produce so much of the stuff !!!

You wouldn't be normal if you didn't want to discuss poo with all and sundry at this stage, and believe you me,HV will be more than glad to go over it with you again!

My DSs poo has always been thick, bright orange and really really smelly. Whoever said breastfed babies have sweet smelling poo haven't met my DS - he smells like someone who lives on brusself sprouts! I wouldn't worry - unless it's reaaaaalllyy strange!

moondog · 27/10/2005 22:27

Really suzi?? That's bizarre. My babies' poo just had a whiff of yoghurt about it!

spidermama · 27/10/2005 22:31

There is a fair bit of ebb and flow I agree. It sounds like it's going just fine.

If it gets green it could means she's getting more foremilk (the stuff that comes out first - thinner, more drinky) and less of the rich, creamier hind milk which has more calories and nourishment.

If it's green you could try keeping her on one breast for longer so she gets to the hindmilk or offering the same breast later.

Look after yourself and keep yourself well rested as this helps with milk production. It's good to lie down as that's when we lactate most efficiently, apparently.

Also feeding at night keeps a great supply going.

I used to like the smell of DD's breastfed baby poo ... I used to take deep sniffs of her nappy ... (when it was still on her, not once I had taken it off ... that would be really weird!)

moondog · 27/10/2005 22:39

I quite liked it to-remember once absent mindedly pressing it to sister's nose for a sniff. She recoiled in horror, but when she had her own a few months later, told me that she then understood exactly.

The whole chain between me,the baby and the end product amazed and fascinated me!

spidermama · 27/10/2005 22:41

I quite like it. It reminds me of cottage cheese or Greek yogurt.

Dh disagrees though. He says it's a mum thing.

pooka · 27/10/2005 22:45

Oh no - I'm with you ghosty.Lovely deep sniffs. Smells abit sulphuric- like a chemistry experiment. Yummy

hunkerpumpkin · 27/10/2005 22:57

DS's always orange - great fountains of the stuff sometimes (boy, that boy could poo - still can, but now it's grim grim grim!).

Also was interested to see the weed-like spinachy bits he'd produce sometimes - whilst still fed solely bmilk. And fascinated that my boobs could produce something that kept him alive and thriving for the first six months of his life - still astounds me!

suzi2 · 28/10/2005 09:00

Moondog - our house smells like cheese or yogurt now from baby sick... but my DH can't smell it - bizarre! But his poos are much more 'adult' smelling! He farts all the time too - very sulphuric. But it's great as you can blame a sly one on him

suzi2 · 28/10/2005 09:01

Sorry - should clarify - I'm talking about DSs poos... not DHs - that would be weird

Twiga · 28/10/2005 20:59

Lol at all the poo chat!

Dd was weighed today, been a fortnight since she was last weighed (10lb 9oz) and is up to 11lb 12oz, so she's doing great!

Suzi2, the thicker stuff dd was producing didn't smell good at all, hoping it won't happen again too often.

Spidermama, thanks for the tips, supply is good at the mo - was worried as dd tends to sleep for 6-8 hours once she goes down for the night and therefore doesn't feed, thought it might effect things but seems to be ok apart from being really uncomfortable myself come morning - expressing first thing has helped ease that a bit though.

Ghosty,Moondog and Pooka, kinda get what you mean about the smell, dd's is usually inoffensive and it does kinda add to the overall cute baby smell.

Hunker, what fascinates me is where do the green bits come from when all she takes in is milk?

Find whole process amazing/weird, but take the number of nappies produced as a sign she's thriving well on things! Poo seems to be back to how it was previously properly today - poor dd good job she'll probably never read this, although it might make good embarrassing chat when she's a teenager - "when you were wee your poo was discussed on www" !
