Feeding Hell

DW & I need some help if poss:

DS 15 weeks old; wouldn't breastfeed from birth, lost 11% of birth weight and put on formula by hospital. Tried breast feeding at home but still wouldn't take despite lactation consultants, cranial massage etc. etc. DW expressed and so he was fed 50/50 for the first 14 weeks. Put on weight, is 99th percentile for height and 98th for weight. Last weigh-in at 13 weeks was over 18lbs. Started to sleep from 11-7. Very happy, chatty, smiley etc. Happiness all round. We thought we had the perfect baby......
But in the last week or so it's all gone Pete Tong. He seems to have started teething. We have tried Calpol, Nelson's granules, Calgel with some limited success and also switched to Aptamil Hungry Baby feed for the 7pm & 10.30pm feeds. But things seems to be getting worse. He screams when he's hungry but bring a bottle anywhere near him and he screams even more. BUT sometimes he'll happily take 4oz of the usual 8 and THEN start wriggling, screaming, spitting. We can burp him but even after that he still won't feed and pushes the bottle away. We have been using Dr. Brown bottles and we switched to a faster teat and that worked for a day or two but not so much now. We can sometimes get an oz down him but then it's almost as if once it hits his stomach then he wants to stop. He is happy (ish) to lie and play on his mat, or sit on our laps but if we recline him into a feeding position then he starts to wriggle etc. He is reasonably content and doesn't seem ill, he just doesn't want food.
WHAT THE BLOODY HELL IS GOING ON??????!!!!! Confused

You do know that hungry baby formula is just more indigestible, right? With a baby with issues, I wouldn't go there!

Some babies do go off their food when teething I think (my DD goes the other way and cluster feeds!).

Could it be that the milk is coming too fast? I ask because DD is a couple of weeks older and doing a similar thing on one breast, and I think it's just drowning the poor mite. I'm block feeding to try and reduce my supply.

Also sounds a bit like silent reflux behaviour but don't know if that can suddenly appear or if it's usually present from birth.

Good luck- I'm sure someone on here will be able to help!:)

i have the same problem with my DS whos now 14 weeks been ging on since he was 8 weeks! he take 8oz feeds now but usually needs lots of breaks and playing inbetween, he too use to take his bottle without a fuss, he did get diagnosied with reflux and the meds have helped he doesn't get so upset with his bottle now but still is a very awkard feeder! i usually manage holding him for the first half then the second half is him lying down propped up with a pillow as when i try to hold him and lean him back to feed he squirms and its impossible! as soon as i lye him down he normally finishes it. i thought maybe teething so brought some bonjela and i'll see how it goes!

Have you had him checked for things like ear infection, chest infection, wee infection, oral thrush, by the GP?

Other than that I would guess at a problem with cow's milk (not lactose but the protein) which has become more noticeable because he is having more of it in his diet all of a sudden. This can cause all the symptoms you describe, including feed refusal. If it were reflux, you might have expected some symptoms before now. If it's cow's milk protein, there are special formulas you can get on prescription - not soy as this is also a known allergen and is unsuitable for male babies due to the high level of estrogen-like compounds in it. Nutramigen, Neocate, Aptamil Pepti my bee worth trying. Ask the GP but be prepared for blank stares - they tend not to be too clued up about this.

may be even!

Have you tried baby ibuprofen by the way? much more effective IME than calpol.
