Should I drop the FF, considering he's gaining like a trooper?

DS just had his 6-week check, and he is 12lbs1. He's 91st centile for height as well as weight, so very much in proportion.

He originally lost 10% of his birth weight and we had a few feeding issues, so I introduced one FF per day to supplement. The doctor has now recommended that I stop that FF, as DS is gaining quickly. Our feeding issues have been resolved, and seeing as he was born 7lbs8, he's doing very well.

Part of me agrees with the doctor: if DS is gaining so very much, I'd only be FF for my convenience, which feels a bit selfish. I will continue to use formula if I really need to (i.e. going for a job interview this week and MIL will FF him).

My concerns are:

  1. Will he 'miss' it? He's used to having it at the same time every day - will he notice not having ti?
  2. Will weight gain slow down? I really don't know whether the FF has more or less calories in it than breast milk - of course one FF per day can't be the ONLY thing making him gain but I'm a bit nervous, because originally he didn't gain on my milk alone.

Any advice/experience of this would be helpful!

I'd drop it and just use ebm instead in a bottle once a day so your partner can do a feed and you can have a rest. I wouldn't withdraw all bottles, but this is purely as my son had a few bottles when born and then I didn't give him a bottle for ages and by the time I tried again he wouldn't take one at all. Which made it so hard to even go out with my H at the time until older.

I'm no expert, but FF is harder to digest as I understand it and so sometimes they can appear more sleepy/ settled for longer because of it. However if he is gaining weight this well you are clearly producing plenty of breast milk so there is no need to keep formula feeding him.

I say give it a try and return to breast milk alone?

I agree with Teaandcakeplease Smile

Well, after reading teaandcakeplease's post, I decided not to give theafternoon FF, and am pleased to report that we survived!

DS actually slept through the time he normally has the FF (about 4pm).

There's been no difference in grumpiness, and he seems to be feeding about the same amount, for now.

We'll see how tonight goes - DS is normally a good sleeper, dropping off at about 10.30pm, and then feeding at about 2pm, 5am and then 8am. Hopefully he'll keep it up without FF!

It does feel good not to FF, to be honest, I'm liking it. Grin

Thanks for the support, guys!
