Could this be colic?

My baby is four weeks old. He has always had a long hiccuping session about twice a day (as he did when he was in the womb!), but now he seems to burp as well and experience wind after feeds. He can go red with discomfort during a feed and pull off the breast angrily, and afterwards I often find that he has done a poo. He often looks very contorted when rooting, and he roots all day. At first I thought he was going through a growth spurt or maybe just cluster feeding, but babies shouldn't cluster feed all day.

I have been responding to his need to be fed close to 12 hours a day (his feeding sessions can last up to five hours with short breaks for nappy changes), and I am changing his nappy about 15 times a day - plenty of poo and wee, so he is definitely getting the milk he needs. But his need to feed constantly - and the fact that if I don't feed him he just cries and cries, and will not be put down on his back - is wearing me out completely. Other than feeding, the only things that comfort him are being carried in a sling (but I have a bad back), being in a carseat, and my baby whisperer DH. I read a suggestion somewhere that he might be feeding so much to push away a blockage from wind, with the problem just reappearing a little later, hence the need to feed again.

He has had green poos with nappy rash during the worst of these sessions. That again makes me think it might be colic... Anyone else with experience that might shed a light?

4 possibilities I can think of are:

Mormal baby who needs lots of physical comforting - some need more, some need less.
Oversupply of milk - might account for green poos
Sensitivity to something in your diet - eg dairy
Reflux - there doesn't need to be excessive vomiting but lots and lots of vomit causing obvoius discomfort would be indicative.

Sorry for brevity but got wriggly baby on lap!

Lots of babies want to suck constantly and be carried - so that could be quite normal. Have you tried giving him a dummy? What kind of sling do you have - stretchy wraps are very gentle on the back.

"Colic" isn't a diagnosis as such - really it just means unexplained crying, usually in the evenings. It could be digestive, developmental, or just a new baby struggling to come to terms with being in the world.

I agree with the possibilities narmarda lists though.
