hi everyone,

ive been reading alot of posts about formula

since my 10 week old was born, i have been boiling the kettle once a day and using it as i go out of the kettle for all his feeds during the day - he has it room temperature so i just add the scoops to his bottle

am i doing this right? was never given too much advice on this... :/

When I gave DS formula it said that you couldn't use water that had been boiled more than 30 mins previously. It's because formula isn't sterile so it needs to be quite hot to kill any nasties. Also you shouldn't reboil water, so you need to refill the kettle and boil for every feed.

It did say though that you could make up a couple in one go and the cool the one you don't need under the tap and put it in the fridge til later.

mummytasha - the water needs to be 70C when the formula powder hits the water because the formula powder is not sterile and can contain bacteria. In practice this is the temperature of a litre of water boiled and left for no longer than 30mins.

This is the latest advice from the DoH and hopefully answers all your questions.

So long as the powder goes into very hot water, you can then cool the bottle and store it in the fridge. The danger is putting the powder into cold or luke warm water.

Yes, boil 1 litre, leave for 30 mins, pour in bottles, add formula. The run the 3 you don't need under the cold tap to cool them down and pop them in the fridge. Reheat as necessary.

I agree, the info isn't given out very well.

flingonthevaliant-

As long as they're in the fridge it's fine. You need to discard them if they've been at room temp for 2 hours. And you should discard after 1 hour if they've been drunk from but not finished.

In the fridge you can keep them for 24 hours.

mummytasha11 · 22/03/2011 17:32

do you do 4 at once, wait for them to cool at room temperature then put them in the fridge?

sorry if im seeming a bit stupid :/

Yes, make up the 4 at the same time. If you're going to use one then, put it to one side and leave it to cool.

Take the other 3 and run them under the cold tap or stand them in a bowl of cold water so that they cool down quickly. Then put them in the fridge. You shouldn't put them in the fridge while they're still hot, but a bit above room temp shouldn't be a problem.
