Potential vitamin D deficiency-what could this mean or my daughter?

I've been called back in for a retest of my vitamin D level. I don't actually know why it is being retested but the implication was that it was low. I am EBFing my 6mo, although about to start weaning. What issues could this cause for her, if any?
Thankyou for any replies.

Sorry aswell don't know anything about it but thought you might like to read this.

Hopefully someone will be along soon who can answer your question.

Did you take a multisupplement including vitamin D during pregnancy (this is now NHS advice but not enough GPs or MWs know this)?

Obviously, you should address this for both you and your LO now, but there is little point worrying about it as you can't go back in time! Low levels of vitamin D are associated with an increased risk of various conditions, but the risk of your LO getting anything would hardly be changed TBH.

Not sure but as I understand it the baby gets all the good stuff first so even of mothers are malnourished they can usually feed their baby. Chances are you are the only one suffering. Have you been taking her out for walks in the nice weather? A lot of vit d comes from exposing the skin to sunlight.

The UV index in the UK during the winter months isn't high enough to generate sufficient vitamin D even if you're out in it for a long time every day. Add that to the fact that we cover our babies up and put sunscreen on children in summer to avoid skin cancer and it's no wonder children in particular need vitamin D supplements.

Hadn't realised that was the current advice for PG mums japhrimel, thanks for that Smile

I've been vitamin D deficient before, so was more careful about checking guidance during pregnancy. Only just realised though - having got the nurse at my post-natal group to check the "birth to Five" book - that it's also now NHS advice that if you don't supplement vitamin D during pregnancy, your baby should have a vitamin D supplement from one month old (think it's added to most formulas). Sadly no-one in the NHS seems to know this!
