Please help me stop breastfeeding!

Hi,

My ds is 11 months and when he reaches 1 year I want to stop breastfeeding. I had always planned to feed until then so I am very happy to be stopping.

I have been looking through some of the other threads asking about this topic and some of them seem to say that its ok if a bf baby won't take cows milk or formula but eats lots of yoghurt.

DS doesn't eat much proper food. He has the occasional day where he eats a lot but he will always eat an apple or a yoghurt or a biscuit or chocolate. He drinks water from a sippy cup.

If he doesn't drink milk then much yoghurt would he have to eat to be adequately nourished, and how much/ what other food is essential or a balanced diet?

Would vitamin drops be a good idea while weaning him off the boob? (I think he's meant to have been having them from 6 months old anyway)

Thank you!!!

My friend asked her paediatrician this question as her dd wouldn't drink any milk (formula). The dr said a small pot would be sufficient. You could also give him baby bel a piece of cheese at another meal.

Other calcium-rich foods are broccoli, cauliflower, hoummous and ham. I've been lucky in that my dd loves all of these, as she too only drinks water from a cup. (I've never even tried giving cow's milk, btw, but she still has boob morning and bedtime - 21m).

I don't know what vitamins are recommended in the uk. In Germany babies get vitamin D/fluoride tablets from birth until 2 years, when they recommend starting to use toothpaste.

If it helps, I found dd ate more veg when given a fork, although I had to help her spear everything at first.

Does your DS not like cows / formula milk?

My DS would only take the new baby formula (I started weaning at 9 months), he wouldn't take any of the older baby ones as they were too heavy, might be worth trying him on that.

have no idea how much they would need on alternatives. We did it really slowly, dropping one feed in the day every couple of weeks and he was fine.

Good luck

I've tried new baby formula and cows milk, he won't drink either.

I think I've read that after a year they need 350ml milk or 3-5 portions of dairy. So I guess most 1 year olds would have 2 milk drinks and 1-3 portions of cheese, yoghurt or milk in cereal or cooking.

Remember you can stir greek yogurt or cream cheese into loads of things, and milkshakes, custard and cheese sauces count too.

Just remembered I made loads of savoury muffins for DD at that age (must make some more). I adapted the carrot and spinach muffin recipe from here.

The basic recipe has yoghurt in and I leave out the salt, pumpkin seeds, etc. You can substitute other veg, eg. courgette, parsnip, sweet potato. I have also done them with grated Cheddar on top, which further ups the calcium content. They freeze really well and are very 1-year-old-friendly.

I want to stop BF when my 11 month DD turns a year at the end of April. She is on solids since she was 6 and 1/2 months and eats everything I give her (chicken, beef, veggies, fish, yoghurt, cheese etc.) but as she is small (not yet 7kg) my paediatrican is keen for her to take baby formula too to try and boost her growth. I've tried loads of different brands but she won't take it. Also she still wants a feed from me at least twice a day and is niggly if she doesn't get it.
How can I stop the BF, and is it really important that she starts to take formula instead? Thank you!
