Alternatives to infacol?

PossetFeatures · 18/03/2011 12:24

I have a 5 week old DS who is formula fed (I was unable to breast feed Sad, and although he is thriving, he has been rather windy/colicky of late, so DP and I have been giving him Infacol 10-15 minutes before each feed.

Checking the bottle of Infacol, I was a bit dismayed at seeing several e-numbers Confused that obviously make up the product- I have enough guilt as it is with not BF, so am keen not to put anything else 'un-natural' into DS if at all possible!

Does anyone know of any natural remedies or more 'natural' over the counter products to treat colic/wind? Any advice appreciated.

gripe water but don't know if it's as effective

I thought you don't absorb the infacol, it just passes through the digestive system, may be wrong though

someone yesterday was saying gripe water had really worked... and its just dill...

runningrach · 18/03/2011 18:53

cooled fennel tea,, made quite weakly.

gripe water is brilliant, very calming...not 100% sure whats in it though.

twinkytonk · 18/03/2011 22:38

gripe water can only be used from a certain age. I can't remember what that is though sorry. How about dentinox? Not sure what's in it as not needed it for a looong time.

happylittlebear · 18/03/2011 22:44

gripe water is ok from 4 weeks

Gripe water worked for me way more effectively than infacol.

HappyAsASandboy · 19/03/2011 03:49

Dentinox colic drops worked fabulously for us, whereas infacol was a pain and didn't work.

You use the denitinox after the feed, so only use if needed. I didn't like using the infacol in case of a problem.

Thanks for your replies- will try gripe water then and look in to Dentinox.

Happy I like the idea of only using something AFTER a feed, and not before 'in case' - I was wondering how long we'd have to keep using Infacol for 'in case' and don't like the idea of dosing DS with it unneccessarily, especially if it's full of crap. had visions of STILL giving it to him when he's a year old!

I found gripewater to be absolutely brilliant. But beware.........................you will find out exactly how windy your LO actually is Smile and wonder how something so small can produce sooooo much wind Smile

I found onion water worked ( an old homeopathic remedy) - slice half a raw onion, pour over boiling water and let cool and use the water - half teaspoon before each feed - worked for us!!

gallicgirl · 23/03/2011 12:53

Found infacol a bit useless really. Would get one big burp part way through feed then nothing else. Gripe water has been more effective and calms DD too when she has tummy ache.

In praise of infacol though - it did make her burps smell lovely! :)

a former mw told me infacol was rubbish & to use Asthon & Parsons Infant Powder instead.....

It says its mainly for teething but also works for colic as it helps with stomach upset, fretfulness etc. Has worked a treat for my boy! You can buy it from Boots...
