I will put a complaint in (again) thisis the second problem I've had with out of hours & breastfeeding. First one told me to give a bottle(triage nurse) & when I said she hadn't had one I was told shed soon learn. Dd3 was 8 weeks & distressed. I refused to take her advice & she got shirty & I then got a call from a GP who said she was talking crap. He originally came on with the attitude of 'ignorant mother' so was obviously set up by the nurse.

Aww poor baby. Can't believe you got told such rubbish advice Angry

Actually I can believe it tbh but it really pisses me off.

A great advantage of breastmilk as opposed to formula is that because it's made perfectly for your baby, she will start absorbing it the instant it hits her tummy. So she will get the goodness from it even though much of it may come back up.

Grrrr some healthcare professionals are idiots. When DS was sick the GP told me to keep BFing, and I have to say he always gets better far quicker than anyone else.

tiredfeet · 18/03/2011 09:21

Glad she kept a feed down Smile .

Like others, When ds had vomiting bug I was advised just to keep feeding.

Hope dd keeps improving

Poor thing, I hope she's better soon. Agree with everyone else, keep feeding as much as you can.

CheeseEnforcementAgency · 18/03/2011 13:21

Been to GP. He thinks a bit of blood in the sick due to retching but should be ok. She wasnt looking as dehydrated today either so something is getting in. This GP said make sure I encourage her to feed and breastmilk will get in even if loads come back. Gold star for this one!

As others have said, you got rubbish advice! Glad you managed to ignore it and good luck with the complaint.

Just to illustrate that different doctors say different things: When DS had a really bad spell of D&V, our lovely family GP told me breastmilk was the best thing I could possibly give him, better than the rehydration stuff, and that he would probably need hospitalising for dehydration if I wasn't breastfeeding him.

Still not doing v well. Couldn't get anything in 8-5 last night & she normally feeds every 2 hours. I've got it now & dd2 so had a long night.

Poor thing :(

Are you dioralyting btw? A few ml every 5-10 mins is best, rather than a whole cup at once IYSWIM. More likely to stay down.

FreudianSlippery · 19/03/2011 07:14

Unfortunately you'll waste a lot of the dioralyte (or there is a cheaper boots version which is the same) as you can only keep it for an hour but little and often is essential. Do you have a syringe instead of a cup/bottle? Or a medicine spoon?

CheeseEnforcementAgency · 19/03/2011 07:29

She gags on the syringe. Cup worked well this am & she fed almost an hour ago so that should be fairly safe by nOw. Shes quite bright atm but we are all laying on the floor with her whilst she plays cos we don't have any energy.Blush

Hope your day improved :) you just do what you can to get through when you are all ill.

DD2 had rotavirus at the same time as DD1 having food poisoning (proper food poisoning that is, as in on a drip in hospiatl due to bloody diarrhea)
She threw up every hour, was 7 months old.
I was told by doc to take her home (was there with DD1) and feed her as often as I could. Even if she threw up straight afterwards the teeny bit of BM that stayed down woudl do much more for her than any amount of formula/rehydrating salts.
Is wearing though, drink plenty of water and get yourself lots of rest as constant BFing (when she starts to feel better) will take it's toll, it's like a newborn growth spurt for a few days.
Lying on the floor sounds like a plan. I had her on a towel next to me while I laid on tehf loor wrapped in a duvet, then I could p;ull her towards me as needed and gently shove her away so she wouldn't vom on me [unsympathetic mother]
