Curry and the breastfed baby

I'm going out for a curry tonight and breastfeed 12 week old DS2. If I have something really spicy, will it affect my milk? I just cannot remember as it seems so long ago that DS1 was breastfed.

Nope, everything should be fine! There are lots of old wives tales about what you should and shouldn't eat. There's some info here that you might find helpful. Enjoy your curry! Grin

Everthing should be fine. Enjoy your curry Smile

My DD got a bright green poo following a thai curry - but she was fine! eat whatever you like...you'll soon figure out if baby objects.

Thanks. I just wanted to be sure as recovering from second bout of mastitis in two weeks and the antibiotics have upset his little tum a bit so didn't want to make it worse!! I'm sure I ate plenty of spicy food when feeding Ds1 but can't remember specifics. Oooooooh, I can't wait now - yum Smile

I really don't believe anything I ate (apart from dairy - she was allergic) had any effect on my DD1. As my mum said, what about all those BF mums in countries where spicy food is the norm? Do they all have hugely windy babies? Nope!

I've had at least 4 curries and exbf 6week old. Haven't noticed any ill effects. Enjoy your curry!

IslaValargeone · 16/03/2011 14:38

I ate loads of curries whilst bf, and dc never suffered any ill effects. She has had a penchant for lamb jalfrezi since she was about 3 though.

I found that when he was tiny, that garlic affected him badly but I think that was when he was days old. The older he got it started making no difference, and now I am weaning he seems to like quite strong flavours, which I find interesting.

Turmeric (used a lot in curries) is very good for the digestive system so I wouldn't worry too much. When I was BF DS, I used to drink a teaspoon of turmeric in a glass hot water, every day, and DS never suffered from any colic (although it wasn't the most pleasant tasting liquid). IIRC it was reported that circumin (compound in turmeric) can also help protect against some type of cancer to do with the digestive system.
