20 week DD with Tongue tie - to snip or not to snip....

My 20 week DD was finally diagnosed with posterior Tongue tie 3 weeks ago. She has been EBF since birth but it's been a struggle and although it's definitely easier now than in the first few weeks (what DP and I call 'the Dark Times'...) she still struggles to finish a boob off as her Tongue gets tired when the flow slows and we get frustrated crying and arching back after almost every feed (except night feeds, which are every hour and a half.... Hmm ). Just had our referral through for the snip tomorrow (I take back everything I said about the NHS being slow) and I'm really just looking for confirmation that I'm doing the right thing. She has gained weight fine since birth - on 25th centile now up from 9th, and is generally a happy little soul. But I'd love to know what bf feels like without pain and chompy clicking, and I do think she might take more and be fuller for longer - rarely goes longer than 3 hrs between feeds and usually more like 2.5. Is there a downside to getting her tongue tie snipped? Sorry for long post, appreciate any words of wisdom from the oracle that is MN. TIA

I had my DD's tongue snipped at about that age.

We had had to mix feed though as she couldn't get enough to stop her losing weight (tt wasn't diagnosed til much later).

It did improve things but unfortunately for us, my supply was very low by that point and DD just refused to feed from me any more within a week of having it done.

The procedure itself was fine though and if your DD is ebf (bloody well done on that with a bad tongue tie by the way) then I would definitely have it done.

Up to you, obviously.

GOod luck Smile

get it snipped. you have nothing to lose and lots more to gain.

TT can affect speech as you probably know, but also breathing and create gastric issues for some people into adulthood. Socially, it can restrict someone from licking and ice cream and kissing.

Thanks for the quick replies :) I think we'll go ahead with it, just hate the thought of putting her through any pain.

My ds had it done at 3 weeks and barely noticed! Cried for about 30 seconds and that was it, literally one spot of blood and possibly a bit of soreness the next day.

When we had it done the doctor said it was best to have it done as babies as it's a 2 minute snip, whereas if it causes speech or eating problems when they're older it can be a much bigger procedure involving sedation/anaesthetic.

My DD is nearly 12 weeks and has had her posterior TT snipped today. It was very quick and simple and we're just waiting to see if ther is a difference. Feeding has been difficult and she has dropped 3 centiles in weight, only gaining about 3 oz per week. I'm pumping like a lunatic to try to increase my supply so hopefully we can continue with bf.
