q about thrush and teats

DD (2 weeks) has thrush in her mouth and I have it in my nipples. We have medication so hopefully will soon go.

MIL likes to think of herself as fount of all knowledge on all things baby/child related and DH always thinks her word must be the gospel. She's very good at imparting her made up facts knowledge on us.

Latest MIL claim is that we should dispose of bottle teats to make sure DD doesn't get reinfected with thrush in this way (I'm bfing mostly with occasional top ups with bottle due to mw advice and also DH does one nightly bottle feed). Doesn't make sense to me as we always sterilise inbetween feeds and surely yeast infections die with heat in the same/similar way bacteria does via a steriliser. DH won't believe me.....is MIL right on this one?

you can either throw the teats away or boil them for 20 minutes as the normal steam sterilising may not eradicate all the thrush spores

Milton targets candida.

mawbroon · 16/03/2011 09:48

I am looking at the BFN leaflet which says:

"If your baby is also sucking on a dummy, bottle tea, nipple shield or plastic toys, make sure these are carefully washed and sterilised (boiling for 20 minutes while the infection lasts may be best). Steam or microwave sterilistation is also effective but cold water solutions appear less so."

Clearly throwing the teats away will also prevent reinfection! But is not neccessary. At least your MIL seems to have a grasp of the concept though Smile

LOL @ bottle tea. Sorry, teat!!

slowangels1 · 16/03/2011 11:20

thanks for that - didn't realise microwave sterilisers didn't kill all thrush spores seona Shock

Might try the milton like japh suggests as we've got some and just read the pack and it says it kills candida. That's easy to do.....she is a big dummy fan though and I don't much fancy boiling up dummies for the next week Hmm . wonder if I would be a terrible mother to just continue sterilising them in microwave steriliser

Thanks mawbroon for BFN info Grin

Milton is easy and as long as you leave stuff in for the required time and make sure there are no air pockets, it should kill Candida. We just have a bucket on the go most of the time for dummies, etc even when I'm not expressing.

Depends how keen you are to get rid of the thrush - it can be really hard to shift. Proper treatment plus scrupulous hygiene is essential. Remember to hot wash bras, washable breastpads (or change disposable ones really often), muslins as well, and watch out for thrush nappy rash too. I think you might have to get rid of any milk you express while you have thrush as well, you can't store it for later use.

Took us about 8 weeks for it to go completely.

slowangels1 · 16/03/2011 12:55

8 weeks Confused I'm washing all clothes etc in milton fabric thingy which kills thrush. Funnily enough rita DD has had nappy rash and we wondered if it was related to the thrush - she doesn't have white (I just did a typo that said shite Shock Wink ) spots there though but red ones so I don't know if that can be thrush. GP didn't ask me about that or check it. I wonder if we need different medication if she has thrush nappy rash too??? Hmm

Almost as soon as the daktarin gel cleared up ds's mouth he got an awful nappy rash - I didn't realise it was related at first either. It was red and spotty/almost scaly looking. You will need a cream for it - what do you have for you and dd at the moment?

It took a few trial and error attempts to find something that worked for us, and you have to treat everything (mouth, bottom, nipples) simultaneously or it keeps going round and round. We had daktarin cream for his bum at first and although it helped, it didn't shift it - eventually I was recommended Canestan HC and that sorted it immediately.

japhrimel · 16/03/2011 13:31

Thrush nappy rash is red and sometimes scaly.

slowangels1 · 16/03/2011 16:26

we've got nystan (something like that)oral drops for dd and regular canestan cream for me. we've just been using sudocream on rash... Hmm

japhrimel · 16/03/2011 16:30

Sudocrem could worsen thrush rash afaik as it prevents it from drying out. Its antibacterial but not anti-fungal afaik.

RitaMorgan · 16/03/2011 16:39

Yes, drop the sudocrem and go back for daktarin/canestan or canestan hc. Are you finding the nystatin drops are helping? We were prescribed them at first but my midwife did say they are pretty useless - had to go back for daktarin oral gel which was very effective.

slowangels1 · 16/03/2011 18:09

Nystatin seem to be helping alot for DD, although my nipples still painful despite cansetan. I'm seeing mw tomorrow so will ask her re: nappy rash.
