I read about this on another site and was a bit Hmm but I have a crack on one side and was wondering if it was worth a try!

It's mostly saline, isn;t it? So it couldn't do any harm to you - but I'm not sure it'd be good for the baby!

Do you mean saline? If so yes I did, albeit a homemade weak saline solution. The most common cause of nipple damage is poor positioning and attachment though so it is vital to make sure this is put right before the nipple will heal. I had had the nipple damage for 10 weeks so I felt it needed something extra to help it to heal. Maybe it would have healed without it but it did seem like it helped. The most important thing is to keep the nipple moist with whatever cream you have. If you let it dry out then when the baby latches on the crack will open up again. Sorry, waffled on a bit there, hope it helped a little! :)

Yeah, it think that is the problem, char char, I got the crack rallybearly on when the latch was obviously wrong. Now i think the latch is better but ds opens it up when he latches on. I have lansinoh and kamillosan so will just persevere with the cream.

This leaflet has a good table showing how well some treatments for cracked nipples work. The most important thing imo is to make sure your nipple isn't dry on latch on, you could maybe try applying cream a little while before he is due a feed (although I know this is often hard to determine!) Good luck, hope you heal up quickly :)

I am an optometrist and the only solution that I can think would be OK to use would be sterile saline as it's just salt and water. If it's a cleaning or soaking solution, I wouldn't as they can contain all sorts of chemicals that I wouldn't want to feed a baby. Some soaking solutions contain peroxide which could be dangerous and would give you sore nipples!

Mind you, breast milk can be handy to cure conjunctivitis so the reverse is certainly true!Grin
