How long after stopping BF do you stop making milk?

Hi - I've cut down feeds gradually after bfing for 14 months and it all went well. For a week my breasts just seemed to be empty and I thought I'd stopped producing milk. But suddenly after a week without feeding they have become really engorged and painful. Is this normal? How long does it last?

Thanks for any feedback

How much were you feeding before? I must have done it quite slowly as I recall being surprised that literally the next day there was no milk, and none ever again! I wondered what on earth he had been eating! Try kellymom maybe for advice?

thanks - I'd been doing 2 feeds a day for months, then went down to one feed for a couple of weeks and as dd was losing all interest I decided to stop altogether. I thought initially that my milk had gone straight away but now a week later i am suddenly in pain!

jinglesticks, I'm in a very similar position to you, I stopped breastfeeding about 2 weeks ago. At first it seemed as though my milk flow had stopped, but after a week I'm suddenly very uncomfortable and leaking all over the place (but only on one side!!!).
I'm expressing a bit in the shower to ease the situation, but was hoping for some idea of when this might sort itself out...

Don't want to scare you but I stopped bf a year ago and I can still squeeze milk out of my nipples Grin

Think mine took a good 3 weeks or so.

I stopped BF 7 years ago and (as I admitted on another thread on here about a year ago) if I squeeze I still can make milk come out without too much effort.

I know some people still have some milk months and years later, but the swollen, painful bit... how long to I have to put up with that?
Any hints for making it go away sooner?

The old one of cabbage leaves in bra maybe?

Sorry not to be more helpful!

I'll stick to breast pads for now Wink
