Is Decaf coffee any issue for BF?

I'm exclusively breastfeeding 4 week old ds2. I know I'm suppoosed to limit the amount of coffee I drink but I presume this is due to the caffine it contains. Are there any issues associated with decaf coffee? Does it count towards 1 of my 8 drinks per day?

Can't imagine why it would have any effect, jcp123 - as you say, it's the caffeine in coffee that makes some people worry about coffee and bf, though there is really very little justification for this, except in susceptible babies and mothers who are drinking huge quantities (you can check yourself here: toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT.

Who has told you that you need 8 drinks a day?

Breastfeeding mothers don't need to drink more than to satisfy preference or thirst....no need to actually count drinks per day, honestly. It's normal to feel a bit thirstier than usual, though.

The 8 glasses of water/day is a myth created by bottled water manufacturers (saw it on a BBC doc about bottled water -'Liquid Gold' I think it was called)

A adult human being needs about 1.5l of fluid per day but this includes the moisture in food, which is surprisingly high.

I agree with tiktok, there shouldn't be any problem with decaf coffee while breastfeeding and in fact a couple of cups of normal coffee if that is what you prefer.

(Just make sure it isn't Nescafe GrinGrin)

Oh, and I was incredibly thirsty during the first few months of breastfeeding DS, and probably drank about 2l of water AND coffee and tea every day.
