Not quite your question but I thought they had to be 12 months to have cows milk as a drink

ObiWanKenobi · 06/03/2011 15:04

If you want to continue breastfeeding you have to be careful. A good friend of mine went into hospital for just a few days and was never able to establish her supply again after that break, even though she pumped while in hospital.

SecretNutellaFix · 06/03/2011 15:13

he's not quite old enough to have cows milk as a main drink.

Can your DH not wait a few days, or leave the baby with you for a few days until your visa issues are sorted?

amirah85 · 06/03/2011 20:30

holiday is quite short anyway, going to visit his family ,and flight quite expensive so he can't wait with me,and i can't take baby by myself as he's on dh passport or he would need a visa as well and no time...i know they're not supposed to have cow's milk as a main drink till 12 month but is only 4 a few days so should be fine God willing.would i have to pump or just some expressing should suffice?i really want to continue bf for at least another year.at same time would be good as night wean, lol

No, it really wouldn't be fine. Your DH will need to take formula and bottles.

Has your DH flown with a baby and DC before? Because if not, I'd say this is completely mad.

amirah85 · 06/03/2011 22:00

cow milk isn't poison you know,it may not have all nutrients needed but baby is eating well...flight's only a couple of hours i would think he should manage...

IME you need at least one adult per small child on a plane if it's not going to be crazy. And the baby will need to be fed on take-off and landing or it will likely scream (you can't tell a baby to swallow to equalise the pressure).

Obviously you'll do what you want, but why ask for advice if you're not interested in anything sensible?

People are getting a tad hysterical over cows milk, aren't they, amirah?

No, cows milk is not suitable as a main drink for a baby that age but it is not his main drink! His main drink is breastmilk and he will be having a short four day break from it! Despite what formula manufacturers would like you to believe, this will be absolutely fine!

amirah, I have left ds3 and ds4 for periods between 2 and four days when they were still bf. On one occasion, ds4 was only 5 months old. On my return they both went straight back on to the breast without a problem as if I'd never been away.

You will need to express for comfort. In my case, I did bring a pump and tried to pump four times a day. I saved that milk and brought it back but that's what I'm like!Grin

Your supply will not disappear in four days. It takes something like three weeks to get to the point where the milk does dry up and even then you could probably still re-lactate

FWIW, I brought ds2 and ds4 away before ds4 was walking. My advice would be to check in all baggage and bring the buggy into the cabin instead, if this is allowed. Otherwise it can be a bit of a struggle carrying a baby and dragging a suitcase and trying to control other ds. Ds2 was actually 11 at the time so was a help, rather than a hindrance but had it been ds3, I think I would have been in a bit of a bind!

MsHighwater · 06/03/2011 23:33

But what would happen if your visa didn't come through OK?

Also, why are things set up so that your dh can travel alone with your ds but you can't?

amirah85 · 07/03/2011 07:24

ds would need a visa to travel alone with me,as he has his own british passport and no time to do that now,he's on dh passport as well so can go alone with him.
japhrime i'm interested in advice,i'm just answering...anyway question was more about the breastfeeding side of the things, but thanks for answering, its good to see other points of view.
japhrime agree about mcow's milk :-)

Sorry, know I'm off on a tangent, but how is ds on husbands passport? Does ds not need his own pasport to travel with either of you, apologies if I'm being a bit dim, a bit sleep deprived Grin. By the way think your husband will be fine with two children on a flight, I'm sure you've had to manage both of them on your own before, won't do him a button of harm. Ps Does baby take a dummy, may help with ears on take off, I have flown with both dds and neither of them have ever had sore ears when taking off or landing.

amirah85 · 07/03/2011 20:29

dh's contry still allow babies to be on parents passport,he has his own british passport as well(3 nationalities :-) )no dummy but he could drink some water from a cup at landing and take off?
