Slightly white coated tongue - do all babies have this or is it thrush? Noooooooo!

My DD is 13 days old and I've noticed she has a slightly (not coated thick) white tongue.

I've tried to look in her throat and she has two tiny white spots - is this thrush or could it be something else?

I did have anti-b's with my csection, but have been taking acidopholous daily since delivery.

I'm hoping desperately it's not thrush - although I'll be going to the doc tomorrow to check.

I've had slight nipple pain, but no cracking and only for the first 15/30 seconds of the feed.

What else can I do? I've read about grapefruit seed extract - how much do I take?

Also using white/cider vinegar diluted to wipe over your nipples after each feed -do I need to wash off before feeding?

TIA

Are the tiny white spots on the very top of her palate, e.g., roof of mouth.? Do they look almost like sticky-out bits of bone? If so they may just be harmless epstein's pearls.

I think a slightly white tongue can be normal - frequent feeding and bits of milk backwashing can cause this. If your baby appears to have a sore mouth though, then maybe you could check with a local BF group?

Is she drooling lots, and does the white stuff rub off? If so it could be thrush. Potion bottle from the doctor will sort it out, it's quite common. Don't know what you need to do for you though!

My ds had a constant white tongue from milk residue for the first few weeks. He also got thrush though, and that was more like white spots/patches, on his gums as well as tongue.

Ok so the spots are at the roof of her mouth, more towards along to back and arranged diagonally three in a line (Im sleep deprived so might not make sense!). They are tiny marks.

She feeds alot (cluster feeds in the evening, 3/4 hourly daily) and the white is always there. I suppose not like a coating, it's not thick like you could scrape it off. (i don't want to try!)

If it doesn't look like you can rub it off - does that mean it sounds like it is or isn't?

She's not drooling a lot. She's feeding well and eating well and putting on lots of weight. Over her birth weight already.

I'll have a look, thanks.

Just panicking that it could be thrush - last time I had such a rubbish time feeding, and this time has been (relatively) pain free and easier, that I don't want it to go wrong.

The only pain I get is on latching on, but temporary i.e. count to 30 and it's gone, if it's not right I put her on again. Or when my breasts are very full, it's painful at the start.

I've had a look, thanks narmada, My DD's ones are less than that - tiny in fact. So far back I wouldn't want to try and rub them off - there's about 3 in total?

Actually, I do get very painful nipples if I'm out in the cold......?

Could it be reynauds or something? I am really not sure. I think it wouldn't hurt to get checked out - have you got a local BF cafe or anything? Failing that I suppose it would have to be GP but they aren't always that good at spotting thrush IME.

I would say if you're not experiencing any issues then you probably don't need to worry. It might be worth going to a breastfeeding consultant to help with your baby's latch to see if that's what's causing the pain at the beginning of the feed. If you have thrush on your nipples they will often also look sort of shiny:

Went to the doctors - it is thrush :( Doctor said its the very early stages so hopefully I'll be able to nip it in the bud (pardon the pun)

So I have some gel for it and I'm going to try that, take all the probiotics, Grapefruit seed extract etc etc. :(

idid, be careful. My GP diagnosed thrush on ds2, I treated him for 2 weeks, by then we had to go back to the paed for a 6 week check. Paed took one look and said "milk!"
