i'd love the mn verdict on this. especially the having no agenda but being pro circumcision.

would you pay £90 an hour to talk to her?

Ok, I'll leave this thread in a sec as I'm getting quite angry with the woman, but have you read the blurb on the pages where the actual 'ebooks' on breastfeeding are sold? (see, Shop) The hard sell and hyperbolic language are appalling! What a way to promote yourself to vunerable and overtired new mothers.

"Don?t waste any more time or energy searching for solutions ? this is the only place you will find practical advice to overcome sore nipples."

"Get started with your treatment plan in the next 2 minutes, which is packed with practical breastfeeding tips and see unbelievable results within days!"

What is she selling - breastfeeding advice or timeshare? Grr.

RJandA · 03/03/2011 15:30

If she thinks her ebook is the only place for practical advice to overcome sore nipples then she has obviously never been on MN!

KaraStarbuckThrace · 03/03/2011 15:50

Hmm I am a peer supporter.

I am thinking about charging 50p an hour for breastfeeding advice.

I agree about the toddler page - it made me cringe reading it. I don't think I am particuarly fantastic for feeding beyond a year. DS and I were just happy to continue! And I know quite a few other mums who have bf for more than a year! Admittedly all of them except 2 are MNers Grin

NinkyNonker · 03/03/2011 15:56

The NCT only charge where there isn't a need in your area though don't they? There are grants otherwise. I want to start the diploma in September but am waiting to find out the grant situation in my area.

MigGril · 03/03/2011 16:20

I wanted to train as a NCT breastfeeding counciler, and could have got a grant as there isn't one in our area. BUT they stop branches funding expencise and as I would have had quit a commutie and in need of childcare in order to do the course I couldn't afford it. Which still leave's no NCT trained counciler in our area, as many people over the year's have tried to do it and have strugled to get the funding.

I trainded as a Helper with the BfN instead and as the traning was local I was able to do it easily.

Shame really still would have like to do the NCT one, but they made it to hard for me to do.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 03/03/2011 16:23

I was joking about charging btw! Just can't believe anyone would pay this woman £90!!

FanellaFudge · 03/03/2011 16:28

Pay me £90 an hour instead... I don't have any qualifications, but I can talk.

VeronicaCake · 03/03/2011 16:34

"Breastfeeding is a science. Since I come from a medical family ? I guess science is something in my blood."

RJandA that was the bit that made me laugh too. My dad is a GP and my sisters are both nurses which presumably qualifies me to give breastfeeding advice too. I can make up random shit about a range of other topics too.

I feel hmmm about the fact she doesn't have children of her own. I take your point TikTok that there are plenty of skilled bf-ing advisers out there who don't have personal experience and it isn't the only type of experience necessary. But her schtick seems to be that she is 'Offering you warm, friendly and non-judgemental advice on breastfeeding'. She is not offering expert advice on infant nutrition and healthy development based on extensive training as a midwife, HV or paediatrician can. She is offering the empathetic and reassuring aspects of breastfeeding support. Now I think that type of support is absolutely invaluable but I question whether you can give it if you haven't either breastfed or at the very least had sole charge of a newborn after giving birth!

Snowsquonk · 03/03/2011 17:28

"But her schtick seems to be that she is 'Offering you warm, friendly and non-judgemental advice on breastfeeding'."

I hate the word advice - advice suggests telling someone what they should be doing. A good BF supporter or counsellor won't ever offer advice - they may offer evidence based information but not advice. And £90 an hour!!!! May I remind everyone of the several helplines which are either free or the cost of a phone call...!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 03/03/2011 18:32

"Breastfeeding is a science. Since I come from a medical family ? I guess science is something in my blood."

Yes, I remember that Cochrane review on evidence that an individual's breastfeeding counselling skills are determined by how many medical professionals they are related to by blood.

Though IIRC they only established correlation not causation - they have yet to isolate the specific gene. Grin

RubyBuckleberry · 03/03/2011 19:07

there are some foreign nationals for example, who will ONLY pay for 'medical' or 'health' provision so there is a need for private breastfeeding practices and afaics there aren't really enough IBCLCs to cover everyone. some women don't want to go to a group and indeed a friend of mine paid for CBC (Shock i didn't know her that early on!) to come to her house because the fee suggested credibility. she did try the voluntary phone lines but no one answered and she needed someone sharpish...

i do think the supervision thing is an issue, i don't like her ebooks, i think her site is all about the hard sell, and i think the circumcision thing is dodgy too. i also think that £1.50 a minute is quite ridiculous.

sungirltan · 03/03/2011 19:08

hurrah. i did suspect this woman was a quack - now i hve the mn verdict!

as a peer supporter i think its a shame she charges so much for what my colleagues and i give willingly for free.

my manager is nagging me like mad to do my nct training (free in plymouth) but i will not be charging 90 quid an hour - wishful thinking though!!

she also advocates mgm :-(

sungirltan sorry to hijack the thread but I've been thinking about becoming a peer supporter but have had no luck finding out anything about it.

Can you tell me where to start please?

aPixieMomma · 03/03/2011 19:14

Oh and I'm in Plymouth too, that's why I'm asking. Lol

sungirltan · 03/03/2011 19:14

crikeybadger - i think she's delusional!

Cool,

I tried that site before but when I click on peer supporter tab nothing happens. Argggg!

tiktok · 03/03/2011 19:19

sungirl, what is 'mgm'?

I am not usually defeated by acronyms but this is new to me :)

aPixieMomma · 03/03/2011 19:21

I'm guessing male genital mutilation?

That is a wild guess though!

HowBreastfeedingWorks · 03/03/2011 20:25

Crikeybadger, I don't think my blood pressure would've coped with seeing her as well at The Baby Show...!

Grin

Hope you didn't mind me linking. Smile

StealthPolarBear · 03/03/2011 20:37

I ahve a cousin and a brother in law who are both doctors.
sungirltan, you have a nasty case of piles. Sit on a leech for the next 2 weeks.

HowBreastfeedingWorks · 03/03/2011 20:38

Goodness no, Crikeybadger - thank you very much for linking! The more people who read it the better, imo - we need good bf info out there, not the mythinformation that's out there courtesy of a shower of self-publicists.
