Is it pointless to keep breastfeeding my 10 month old?

Just got back from the drs. I didn't want a medication that would mean I'd have to give up nursing him. Dr said I may as well do it now, and in fact it wouldve done him no harm if I'd given up at 6 months. He's the second Dr to say it too Sad

Englebert - you can bf on morphine bizarrely, I have with medical approval, both in hospital with IV morphine and at home with ora-morph. Though please don't anybody start swigging ora-morph whilst bfing now it tastes vile Wink

Sigh. Yet another doctor talking shite!

TruthSweet · 02/03/2011 19:41

God yes more complicated but not a complete no-no under medical supervision and with the appropriate consideration for baby's age/weight, exclusivity of bfing, no. of feeds, etc. And definitely not because some random on t'interweb has said you can Grin though where you would pick up ora-morph from I don't know (says she who's GP sent a prescription for it to the nearest pharmacy and MIL picked it up for me!)

Glad you have some reassurrance. My friend went to the doctors last week for mastitis-had just gone back to work,DS 1 year- and the GP gave her a prescription for antibiotics and told her she couldn't BF while on them, and it didn't matter because at 1 he would be giving up anywayShock She was really upset, but took him at face value because he was a 'doctor'. Luckily she phoned me (bf mass murderer, is that the correct terminology Wink ) and after one quick google we found the antib's fine with bf. (She did go to her own GP just to check, but just shows other doc didn't even think to look it up) Makes me very Hmm and Angry that there doesn't seem to be a uniform policy amongst health professionals, let alone common sense and a vague interest in the benefits of bf.

JerryG I am 99% sure that is the cream I was given when ds2 was a baby and I was told not to breastfeed, (I had an awful rash that turned out to be ringworm, euuux) I dont know how long you have to take it for? I had to do a minimum of 4 weeks, the local nct hired me a brilliant breast pump which I did (and had to pour down my milk down the sink, sob) I was happily surprised that Ds happily latched on again after a month. During this time I even thought about a milk donor but gave formula instead. Hope this gives you another thought as it is possible for you to get better and still keep up the b/feeding if you want to.

I was prescribed Daktacort for a rash on my breasts when breastfeeding - I think DS was about 6 months. The dr knew I was bfing and said it was fine. Feel a bit worried now having read the above, but then DS is now 14.5 mo (still bf) and showing no ill effects... Obviously am not recommending ignoring medical advice but thought I would chuck my experience into the mix.
