Soya based formula?

I've been prescribed a soya formula for DS (20 weeks), and I'm a bit annoyed about it now that I've read some of the info about soya formula. I'm not sure whether to give it to DS, or whether I should ask for a new one.

He won't really be drinking it. I've been told to wean him early (due to reflux), so it's mainly for mixing with his solids, and maybe the occasional bottle.

Would you use it? Is it really that bad? Or will it be ok in such small quantities?

Thanks for any advice!

i wouldn't use it, personally. no

i'd go back and ask for something like nutramigen or neocate.

is he breastfed otherwise? cos you can use EBM for mixing with solids. or just use water

Yes, he's breastfed, but I can't express any at the moment, either by hand or with the electric pump.

I didn't know I could use water, they all say milk.

I'll go back tomorrow and see if I can get something else.

Thanks.

Very unusual to be prescribed soya formula - definitely worth asking why when it has long been known to be recommended only for babies who really cannot tolerate any form of cows milk formula.

Agree with thisisyesterday - normally no reason why solid food cannot be given with water (if they need to be mixed with something).

Thanks Tiktok, I'm definitely going to query it tomorrow, the more I read the less I understand why we were given it.

They think DS is CMPI, I thought nutramigen would be ok for that?

I'll use water for now then, thank you.

I had to tell my GP about the potential risks of soya formula for boys. He had never heard of it and prescribed a soya formula to start with. He did very quickly look into it and call me back with an alternative prescription, once he had spoken to a dietician. GPs are precisely that, general practitioners and are not experts in everything medical.

To be fair, I am not sure that the soya problems are fully proven either, but I haven't looked into it for a while, so happy to admit I may be similarly out of date Blush
