BF with d&v?

Please could someone give me some advice? I've been ebf'ing my 3 week old dd (first baby) and tonight seem to have come down with diarreah and feel sick (tho not yet vomited). Not sure if it's something I've eaten or a bug.
Can I continue to bf? Is it safe to do so? I feel crap but would really like to continue. Thank you for any advice.

yes you can continue - it will be the best thing to make sure your DD doesn't catch the bug from you (your breastmilk will give her some immunity)

make sure you keep your fluid intake up - even if its only small amounts. It doesn't matter if you can't eat much...your breastmilk is not affected by your diet (or lack of food) for a few days.

D&V is awful - hope you get better soon Smile

Like the other posters have said, its fine to keep on feeding, in fact its the best thing for LO as you will be passing on your antibodies.

Keep drinking plenty of water and see if you can get some help.

PrettyCandles · 01/03/2011 06:55

Yes, keep feeding. It is the best protection for your dd and you won't infect her through your breastmilk.

Keep yourself hydrated and rest as much as possible. For your own comfort moisturise your hands as they may get uncomfortably dry from all the handwashng you're likely to be doing.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you all for your advice - I'm so surprised that my breastmilk will be fine (and pleased!) and that it will in fact protect her from catching this from me! Amazing aren't we?!
I projectile vomited over the bathroom floor shortly after first post but DH has been great. Giving dd her first feed now so will try keep fluid consumption up. Got my mum coming to stay later thank goodness!
Thanks again for advice and reassursamce!

I did that with my DS as I was EBF with him and I got noro-virus when he was 8 weeks old. I managed to spread it to my entire extended family as I didn't know about the 48 hr infectious period after symptoms cease. There was another BF baby there and they were the only two peep not to get sick.

A good thing for keeping fluids up are isotonic drinks (not lucozade) sip regularly

Lulabel27 · 01/03/2011 09:52

Hi I have flat lucozade in the fridge can I not have that? What other isotonic drinks are there?

japhrimel · 01/03/2011 10:31

Lucozade only has glucose in it, so no sodium or other electrolytes. But it'd be way better than nothing (or water probably).

I bf through a D&V bug recently and the only issue was getting dehydrated.

tiredfeet · 01/03/2011 10:38

Poor you. I had vomiting bug recently and breastfed through but it was really tough i struggled to stay hydrated and also to have enough energy. Main thing that helped was dh doing everything else so I could get as much rest as possible. Do ring your gp if your struggling, mine took it quite seriously as he knew breastfeeding meant it would be harder to cope,he gave me an anti sickness injection when it got really bad
Hope you recover quickly

mum2oneloudbaby · 01/03/2011 21:17

You need to be looking at things like Gatorade and other such sports drinks. I had food poisoning while feeding dc1 and the isotonic drinks were the only thing that helped. Recommended to me by gp and you must sip at them as much as you can whenever you are awake.

Yes keep feeding!! When DD was about 3 months old and ebf, she was the only person in our household who didn't suffer from a horrendous vomit/diarrohea bug.
