I've completely lost track and we're spending so much time winding and nappy changing that the whole process takes up to 1.5 hours!! i have no idea what constitutes a decent feed in terms of minutes sucking....

I really wouldn't worry about how long the feeds are, some babies are slow, some are really quick and efficient feeders.

Is your baby satisfied after a feed? That's the main thing.

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 27/02/2011 21:59

he's rsther sleepy so i'm concerned that he's falling asleep before he is satisfied - 1.5 hours is rather a long time to be awake at that age!!!

Difficult to say - often an hour or more at that stage but he did a lot of sucking, then dozing, then sucking, then dozing. For some babies a 20 minute feed might be all they need though.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/02/2011 22:36

Do you need to wind? I just used to sit DS up for about a minute and then shove him on the other side.

I do remember it taking ages at that early stage though, and wondering when the hell I was supposed to get any sleep if DS was feeding every 2 hours and a feed took an hour or more by the time we'd changed and settled him.

Does he have periods of alertness during the day or is the sleepiness a constant thing?

IMO you should just go with the flow at this age. If your baby is hungry, s/he'll tell you!

FWIW I didn't wind my baby at all at this age. I only started at a few months when a friend told me I HAD to.

Even then I didn't keep going until a burp came - if one came straight away then good, but if not then I didn't stress. My mate's baby had colic though, and so this was more important to her i think.

Do you have to wind I wonder?

RitaMorgan · 27/02/2011 23:04

Oh yes, I never winded either.

i have to wind or all the milk comes out again!!!

i just lost a good solid feed this morning and he fed very poorly overnight. he's asleep now so we'll have to try again later.

You'll be suprised how much of the milk stays in even when they seem like they've done loads of sick. Someone told me a good tip of spilling say a teaspoon or something of milk - just to prove it looks more than it is iyswim. And remember their tummys are so tiny at this age. Just feed whenever he wants to, try your best not to clock watch (I know its hard), and just go by your LOs cues. You sound like you are doing a great job!

I kept a feeding diary of times up till DD was about 3 weeks and if I recall most feeds were between 15min to 40 min at that age. Looking back I think a lot of it was sucking for comfort rather than feeding. The slightest cry and I'd put her on the breast as I was scared she wasnt getting enough milk. Suffice to say she must have been as she put on a pound a week till she was over 3 months old!
I think I took feeding on demand to the extreme

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 28/02/2011 10:49

What Titty says is so true, what looks like the whole feed coming up is nowhere near it, lots of milk stays down.

I know it is hard to just go with it and not worry about how much they are getting etc etc. I remember being obsessed with DS to start with, but we had tons of problems with weight loss, bad latch, low supply and all sorts - DS was 5 weeks old before he was back to birthweight.
It doesn't sound as if you're having any problems, so just try and relax and respond to your baby. :)
