Interesting view of type of woman who breast feeds

This is a really small thing, but did anyone hear PM on Radio4 this afternoon - they were listening in on the Green Party's party conference, and it was really interesting how they started the report...'as we arrive, there's a woman breastfeeding at the reception desk'...are they implying that breastfeeding is environmental, or that all breastfeeders are green vegetarians who don't shave their legs...ok I know that's a blinkered view of the green party (and I've voted for them - don't any Green people get offended) - it was just the context of this report that had me intrigued. I wonder if they would start a report of the conservative party conference with 'and as I arrive there's a group of people at the front desk in green wellies and barbours, looking for pigeons to shoot.' ( any conservative mumsnetters)

it is odd that isn't it. like you suggest - it's using breastfeeding to suggest an liberal, green attitude.

abbysmum · 12/09/2003 19:36

I suspect you wouldn't find a breastfeeding mother at any other political party's conference though.

lucy123 · 12/09/2003 19:47

I can just imagine that Conservative conference radio broadcast!

I think abbysmum is right though - I bet the other parties don't have breastfeeding mums on reception. And it is a green thing, as well as being best for baby (and, as far as I was concerned, the most convenient feeding method! )

Good on the greens!

I wonder if the Greens put her there on purpose?

Oh dear, I'm a vegetarian who has never shaved my legs & bf my 4 for 15 months each.... I'm not green!!! I drive, I hate cyclists & I can't be bothered to recycle

musica · 13/09/2003 11:50

Didn't mean to offend any veggies etc....either!

suedonim · 13/09/2003 12:41

Tallulah, according to this article it seems as if all b-feeders are green, whether we like it or not!

Lilypad · 13/09/2003 12:55

I bf my 3 because it was cheaper, easier and better for my DSs than formula, not because I'm 'green'! I drive and only recycle what I can put in my recycle box outside the front door!

Done it again 4 got to change nickname.

Angiel · 13/09/2003 13:07

What was/is your username Rainbow? There are lots of new people, or new names, I'm getting confused! Obviously don't spend enough time on here.

RobinW: Poor Brian. Has he dried out yet?

pidge · 15/09/2003 10:08

RobinW - the MP you're thinking of is probably either Betty Boothroyd or Gwyneth Dunwoody, both of whom opposed breastfeeding in parliament ...

Dunwoody backs breastfeeding ban

Makes me mad ....

Welshmum · 15/09/2003 11:18

It was a Labour MP who wanted to breast feed in the House of Commons and was forbidden. I've been to all the party conferences for work and I think you could breastfeed at any them - I would have done but maybe not during the leader's speech. I'd say it's statisically less likely to happen at the Tories because of their member profile.

It was the Labour MP Julia Down. She was told that taking refreshment into certain parts of the H of C was forbidden - that included her feeding her baby...

zebra · 15/09/2003 11:56

Darnit, they've found me out.

Shucks, no goats. Are guinea pigs nearly as good as goats?

Ah, but I'd have to grow my own chile peppers to make the truly eco-friendly guinea pig curry, right?

bluecow · 16/09/2003 12:41

Yes, I heard that and thought the same - it was a cheap shot because it came across as pejorative rather than just descriptive.

eidsvold · 16/09/2003 19:57

there was an aussie mp who was banned from the parliament for breast feeding her baby during parliament.

eidsvold · 16/09/2003 19:57

oops forgot to add - can't remember what party she was.
