SMA Cartons Bulk Buying?

RosieBeagle · 26/02/2011 18:38

Hi
DD 4 months has silent reflux.Have tried swapping milks but all seem to be the same so gone back to SMA gold. GP and HV both said to try the ready made cartons along with infant gaviscon which does seem to be helping but obv it costs a hell of a lot more - although worth every penny if it stops the constant sick and cleaning!
Any one know if places like Costco sell the cartons cheaper if you are bulk buying? just thought id save a wasted trip if they dont.

Many thanks Smile

I think it's illegal to have offers or discounts on formula, so they're probably all about the same price everywhere.

Hi, retailers are not allowed to discount first stage formula so I'm afraid you won't be able to get it discounted anywhere. Sorry about that.

I have heard that Costco is cheaper for nappies than other shops?

Do you have access to any wholesalers (eg places like Booker) that might be cheaper?

Bubbles1066 · 26/02/2011 19:22

They can't discount first milk at all. If you want to buy in bulk though I'd recommended somewhere like Tesco.com as you can order a whole crate load if you want and they will deliver them to your door and you won't have to lug them about (you will get no clubcard points though). I would ask your GP if you could get any milk on prescription though as it would be much cheaper.

Thanks BTP love the name! Tried staydown but it still came back just thicker Sad. was told to try Hungry baby stuff too but had opposite effect and made her more hungry...
so back to SMA gold which she was on from birth. tried appitmill and that came back worse. think this is also linked to her baby ecezema. waiting for a referral to dermatoligist for that.
Forgot that its illegal to promote formula so ritamorgan will be right if they sell it will be around the same price. oh well....

It is illegal to promote, but I presume that shops do sell it at a profit, so if you can buy froma wholesaler that should be cheaper.

good idea bubbles thankyou.
can the gp prescribe formula then? they have never mentioned anything but suppose it is coming out of their budget eh. I will ask the question

enfamil is available on prescription and we was prescribed it for DD as she had reflux and nothing else worked......have you tried colief and also cow and gate comfort??????

RosieBeagle · 26/02/2011 19:31

havent tried cow and gate comfort - any one else tried this and found it to be any good?. tbh was wary of trying too many different things incase made it worse.... but could give it a whirl. just also scared it will make her ecezema worse too all this chopping and changing. to top it all she now has a pavlik harness fitted for a hip problem and cant kick her legs when she has wind. my lovely dd seems to have one thing after another at the moment Sad along with an ear infection, cold and shes teething!

From what I understand formula for medical purposes (lactose free, soya etc) can be available on prescription in some cases. It's worth asking as your baby does have a medical condition. I assume you get the infant gaviscon on prescription too?

RitaMorgan · 26/02/2011 19:34

Could she be allergic to cows milk? I think that can cause eczema.

narmada · 26/02/2011 19:36

If your baby has eczema in addition to reflux symptoms, this should raise a red flag for cow's milk protein intolerance I think. If it is that, then you will need either a hydrolised formula (eg nutramigen, pepti junior) or a completely hypoallergenic one - trouble is, these formulas are $$$ so docs don't like prescribing them, and also are not very palatable. Currently trying to wean my DS onto a hypo formula and not having much luck as it tastes vile.

RosieBeagle · 26/02/2011 19:38

yes bubbles we get the gaviscon on prescription. another trip to the docs then i reckon. they dont seem bothered as she is putting on weight - but its constant cleaning up - sounds like i am being neurotic about that i suppose but its just not right! right up to the next feed she is being sick. ive read about reflux on here and she doesnt in any way suffer like others do with it so am so grateful for that. she has hiccups a lot, the constant being sick and terrible wind but shes not screaming day and night about it and up til last week she was sleeping through 8pm to 8am so i count myself very lucky with that.
