Advice on thrush in breast/nipple

I have had thrush in my nipple/breast for about 4 weeks now. The pain was so bad that I stopped b/f and expressed but I never dreamt that it would last this long. My milk supply has been diminishing and I was so freaked out that I started b/f again even though the thrush hasn't gone and it is still really, really painful.

I have so far had an anti-fungal cream for my skin and Nystatin for LO's mouth and now have a bacterial cream in case I have a bacterial infection too. I have bought a new steriliser and am boiling my bras etc. I have seen the BFN leaflet but Dr I have been seeing has only prescribed creams and suggested that oral medication was not safe.

I really want to carry on b/f but am deprssed by my rapidly diminshing milk supply and the pain during and after feeding.

Does anyone have any advice re thrush?

See another doctor and get a proper course of fluconazole prescribed! Also you probably need daktarin oral gel for your baby. Do you have canestan for your nipples?

You need to make sure you are both treated - oral treatment is safe although it's not licesnsed, but it's licensed to give to children in a higher dose than they get passed through the milk. but you also need to be vv strict with hygeine while you have it, sheets, towels, bras, breastpads (if washable) all washed at 60deg, ironed as hot as you can (yes even the bras) every day - if you don't want to wash your sheets every day, sleep on a towel and wash that. Also remember to sterilise any dummies, or toys etc that your baby is chewing.

Don't forget as well you can take painkillers (paracetamol or ibuprofen, not asprin) for the pain of feeding if you need to.

Rita - i have Daktarin and LO has Nystatin. Is Fluconazole very effective? I am so fed up with having it and not being able to feed.

Cosmosis - doing all that with towels etc

You need the flucanazole. It's okayed for babies at higher doses that it appears in breastmilk so my GP was fine about prescribing it. Your doctor is making uninformed decision - see someone else would be my advice.

I second that you need flucanazole as that worked for me. I also used nipple shields to get me through the pain of feeding which mesnt that feeding was pain free and there was no issue with diminished supply. Good luck x

Yes, it works. Worked for me, BfN recommends it.
