Breast milk... as a business?!

Hi all,

I would be interested to hear your views on the news story published on the Real Business website this week that premium ice-cream makers Icecreamists have launched a range of, wait for it, breast-milk ice cream!

Read about it here: snipurl.com/252s63

Mothers get paid £15 for every ten ounces of breast milk they contribute.

Completely nuts or a good business proposition?

Let me know what you reckon!

Kate

Nuts. Why would you eat someone else's bodily fluid! Do they check it? Run tests?
(Obviously babies dont eat ice cream)

RJandA · 25/02/2011 15:51

Doesn't seem like a very good deal for the mothers, does it? It would take me ages to pump that much. Women being exploited again... ho hum. If it was fairtrade (i.e. the mums paid a decent amount) then I might be more interested.

Also he claims it's organic, which I highly doubt he can back up.

Nice bit of publicity but I doubt it will last. Sorry if I sound a bit like a grumpy old cow.

NikkiTwinkle · 25/02/2011 16:00

My dad told me about this when I was feeding my daughter! My reaction was £15 is that all? I'd want more than that for the precious stuff. Anyway if you've got lots left over donate it to little babies who desperately need it not for ice cream!

Zimm · 25/02/2011 16:01

CountessVon Errrr unless you are vegan you must be drinking a cow's bodily fluids most days??

EauRouge · 25/02/2011 16:03

It's a ridiculous gimmick, I would far rather donate BM to a SCBU unit or milk bank.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 25/02/2011 16:06

Another way of exploiting women. Still you can buy and sell body parts and even babies these days, so I suppose breastmilk is just another commodity in those terms.

HattiFattner · 25/02/2011 16:10

just think of the "herds" of "dairy mums" -all lined up with a big suction cups on their norks, munching chocolate cake while tapping away on mumsnet!

There could even be "Channel Island" milk and "cream of cornish" - and it gives the term "Yummy mummies" a whole new meaning......

......sorry,drifted off there into John Dorian land for a moment....

foxytocin · 25/02/2011 17:37

Kate, has anyone pointed you to the 'media/non member requests' board yet? fee is £30 iirc. cheers.

CountessVonKnackerstein · 25/02/2011 21:02

Zimm I said someONE else's bodily fluids not someTHING else's bodily fluids :) I couldn't be vegan though, I don't think vegan chocolate would taste as nice as Cadbury :)

TettyLouBar · 25/02/2011 21:13

OMG - next it'll be cheese, butter and yoghurt! Grin

Zimm · 27/02/2011 09:00

A cow is not a 'thing'.

CountessVonKnackerstein · 27/02/2011 10:42

Obviously Hmm
