I was advised to drop a feed every few days rather than just stop altogether as could risk getting mastitis this way.

Am sure more knowledgable ladies will be along soon to offer advice.

I'm stopping a feed every week but you could probably do it slightly quicker.

Cosmosis · 25/02/2011 09:08

you are best to stop gradually or you will end up at best v sore and engorged or with mastitis like paymeoff said.

yet again some rubbish bf advice from a hv :(

I've heard that you should drop a feed per week to give your body time to adjust - I've always done it a lot slower because that suited us anyway. I think it also depends on how responsive your body is, mine seems to be particularly slow to work out feeds aren't required, but other people manage to miss feeds and not have problems with engorgement.
You can always express a little to relieve pressure if it's uncomfortable. But generally, if you are solely breastfeeding, don't just stop completely all of a sudden!
Hopefully someone will be able to add to this too. xx

Hi baby rose, how old is your baby and how many feeds are you doing at the moment?

When I stopped I did it by initially night weaning, then getting down to just 2 feeds a day, first and last thing. I then dropped the morning one, and finally the evening one. By this point my DS was over 12 months and therefore I was able to replace these 2 feeds with a beaker of cows milk, which he still has, so didn't have to worry about introducing a bottle.

If your baby is under 12 months you'll need to replace some feeds with formula feeds, but maybe drop some depending how old they are. Each tome you drop a feed you may feel a bit uncomfortable and full, but body soon adjusts. You can hand express a bit off if you feel really bad. Personally I wouldn't go completely cold turkey unless you are already down to only 1 or2 feeds a day.
