EBF 5mo DS - smelly, sticky poo, is this normal?

Very recently my 5mo DS's poos have changed.

They used to be what I would call a typical BF baby poo, yellow, watery looking, and had quite a pleasant smell (to my nose anyway!)

Now they seem very, very sticky, when I change his nappy it seems caked on a bit. There is always a lot of it. And it seems to smell foul!! The smell can't be down to it hanging around in his bowel too long, as he is still pooing everyday. Also the other thing I considered was a stomach bug, but wouldn't it make his stools looser?

Any ideas?

I assume you haven't started solids as that changes poo entirely! For EBF, I've found poo changed due to my diet occasionally but more often due to change in feeding pattern, like shorter feeds and not getting enough hind milk made it greener for example!

Any other signs of illness?

Have you checked on here yet?

Does it look sort of foamy? And has he had a lot of wind?

My dd had 11 weeks of the typical poos you describe (several per day!) then suddenly became much windier, didn't poo for 48 hrs then for the next few days she had the thicker/foamy/sticky/smelly type poo you describe. Google searches suggested fore/hindmilk imbalance and describe the foamy poo as often being green although dd's stayed yellow. Midwife said not to worry unless the colour changed drastically, I've been doing massage to help get the wind out, and the poos/wind gradually seem to be going back to normal. Don't know what caused the excess wind in the first place but dd is happy and healthy so all I'm doing is making sure she stays on each breast for long enough to get plenty of the fattier milk.
