Very efficient feeder or something to worry about?

DS is nearly 4 weeks old, all seems fine with him, ebf, putting on weight, wet and dirty nappies. The only thing worrying me is that when he feeds he takes on average 10 minutes and has done since week 2. He feeds between every 2 and 4 hours. Given all of this I'm sure there isn't an issue but it is worrying me a bit particularly as DD used to take at least 20 minutes a feed, is he just really efficient or should I be concerned, should he be feeding for longer? Any thoughts much appreciated. Guess I wouldn't be the mum of a new born if I wasn't worrying about something Grin

I wouldnt worry about it, my DD was like that from early stage too and she still take less than 10mins (at 15weeks) which sometimes worries me. People just keep saying she's a efficient feeder!

popcrackle · 23/02/2011 16:53

I think if you are worried then that is something to check out but saying that there will probably be growth spurts where it will seem that all you do is feed, feed, feed so I say enjoy the calm now.

However, if you do have any concerns it won't hurt to check them out.

Boy has always been the same. Now at 23 weeks, daytime feeds can be started and finished in about 6 or 7 minutes (unless he faffs about looking at everything). Night feeds are more relaxed, maybe 12-15 minutes.

Don't worry, its normal.

I am so very jealous of the other posters. Envy You all have super feeders. Wow!!!!!!!

Fuzzywood · 23/02/2011 17:00

Thanks all, relieved to hear there are others out there who are the same. Will have to find something else to worry about!
popcrackle it is pretty useful for getting stuff done, or would be if I could get him to sleep somewhere other than on me in the daytime Smile

Popcrackle it cuts both ways. I dont have time to procrastinate eat cake MN relax anymore.

My DD (19 weeks) was and is the same. I was very concerned after reading some books that talked about 20 mins on each side. I therefore spent far too much time having her weighed in the first few months than was healthy for my sanity despite her following her trend line completely.

Other than offering him the other side just to be sure he's done and checking he's not coming off because he has wind, I would say you are just lucky with an efficient babe.

TittyBojangles · 23/02/2011 17:21

Ditto, DS is the same and always has been - if I can get him to feed for 10 mins then it's a miracle! Don't clock watch, I've only just stopped worrying about this (16 weeks).

MummyBerryJuice · 23/02/2011 17:32

I wouldn't worry (although I did when DS was that small Grin). Only when he go a lot bigger (around 5/6 months) did he lengten his feeds as he seemed to start comfort sucking a lot more.

japhrimel · 23/02/2011 17:41

If he's following his centile line and has yellow nappies (not green) then he sounds fine.

narmada · 23/02/2011 19:18

My DD was like this from about 8 weeks - she could empty a breast in about 3 minutes, and was as chubby as anthing.

Fuzzywood · 23/02/2011 19:22

Thanks again. Nappies most definitely yellow, bit too early to tell about the centile line but he was 8lb 8.5oz at birth and had put on 17ozs by day 20 so it all seems to be going really well. Very reassuring to hear he is normal so will try to stop worrying about it. Now to sort out the sleeping somewhere else apart from on me Smile

17 oz????? You have nothing to worry about IMHO. Well done you!

MrsDrOwenHunt · 23/02/2011 19:39

Fuzzywood · 24/02/2011 10:39

Thanks ladies, guess I shouldn't be too surprised at his behaviour as DH can inhale a plate of food in minutes, DS must take after his dad!

Moulesfrites · 24/02/2011 10:50

My ds is the same, he is 4 and a half weeks, weighed 8lb 7 at birth and at 3 and a half weeks weighed 11 lb 4. I think, like you, he must have inherited his dad.'s appetite. Am going to take him to get weighed tomorrow though, am getting quite obsessive about it! Contests on your ds.

Fuzzywood · 24/02/2011 11:03

Moules sounds like you're doing a great job. It must be greedy boy syndrome, congrats to you too. Think I'll go and get him weighed next week but he's visibly much bigger (growing out of clothes) so he must have put on weight. Trying not to get obsessed about it and listen to what my head is telling which is that he's doing really well Smile.
