Cyclizine and breastfeeding

adamomma · 23/02/2011 13:52

I was prescribed cyclizine for morning sickness and while I didn't take it immediately, I am now getting up in the night to be sick (3 times last night) and I'd like to give it a go.

However, I'm still breastfeeding my DD and I can't remember if I mentioned this to the doctor. I've tried to call the surgery to double check but their phones aren't working. I also tried NHS Direct and I'm waiting for a call back.

I was wondering- has anyone taken cyclizine while breastfeeding?

Thanks

Don't know about that one sorry, but if you call one of the helplines they should be able to tell you.

Hope the sickness eases soon too.

Adamomma,

this is what LactMed has to say about cyclizine.

It sounds like your biggest problem would be your milk drying up - which could happen in pg anyway.

Depending on how old your DD is that may or may not be a problem (I've bf through 2 pg and DD1 & DD2 have dry nursed when I have no milk [for me no milk between 14-24/26 wks]).

If your DD is under 1 she would need supplementing with formula, if she is 3+ then I, personally, wouldn't worry about supplementing, in between I'd probably give additional cow's milk (and I did whilst pg).

Thank you both so much for your replies.

I still haven't managed to get a hold of the GP and NHS Direct were informative, polite, but not very definitive. I had never seen the LactMed website before, so thanks for that.

I'm not too worried about my milk supply as DD (2.5) is already dry nursing half the time anyway. It's more comfort than anything else at this point.

Thanks again!

Hi adamomma - how are you feeling? I had thought Cyclizine rang a bell and it does - I had it by IV when I had pancreatitis and was feeding DD3 who was 6m (and DD2 who was about 2.6y/o but she wouldn't go near me let alone bf when I was in hospital) I got told I needed to pump'n'dump but Wendy Jones from the BfN (the BFC/Pharmacist) said I didn't need to at all as Cyclizine is prescribed to children in doses far greater than what would go through my milk.

Hope your MS is better and you don't need it though Smile

I spoke to a doctor at the surgery (but not the one who originally gave me the prescription) who told me the best thing to do would be to stop breastfeeding. Umm......thanks......

So, anyhoo, I took one tablet at 6pm for three days. I had a lovely supper each night and managed to keep liquids down. Then I had a nice long sleep. It was great. I hoped that maybe I'd recuperated enough and didn't take one last night. What a mistake. So I will be taking a tablet at night until the weekend when I (and DD) will be delivered in to the care of my MIL (who is awesome). DD doesn't seem to have any effects from the cyclizine, although, honestly, I was hoping for some sleepiness......

Thank you so much for your help, it was so much more useful than anything I got from the NHS!

adamomma - strangely enough I got given cyclizine yesterday by IV as I had a GA to remove some teeth I'd smashed by grinding.

The anaesthetist assured me it was perfectly safe for bfing mothers as they give it to children (which I knew but nice to be told). Plus the anaesthetic nurse congratulated me on nursing a 16m/o and a 3 y/o Shock usually I get a 'well you know they don't need breast milk after XX days/weeks/months'.

Really hope you feel better soon and have a good time with MIL getting looked after.
