Substantially more BM from one breast??? WTF?

DS 7 months now on three solid meals a day. Has cut back his BM intake during the day quite a bit but is making up for it with 2 extra overnight feeds (sigh...)

He's at nursery today, and I've discovered that my breasts, which used to be super milk machines, are now operating VERY asymmetrically. Today so far I've pumped 8 oz from my right breast but only managed to squeeze 3 oz out of the left.

What the hell is going on? Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to even things up again?

Confused

It was normal for me beanlet. I fed my 2nd DD unilaterally from 3 months and she didn't have solids until she was 10mo because I couldn't be bothered with all the effort involved in making up the milk on the less productive side (which I had already struggled through with dd1)

There are things you can do though, such as expressing more on that side, always offering that breast first etc etc. But I just wanted to reassure you that you are capable of making enough with just the one (though you might not like being misbalanced I never worried about that).

It's quite common, yes. Feeding from the 'weaker' breast first at each feed can often to even things up quite quickly. TBH it depends if the breast is just less productive or if DS favours the right one.

It's just really weird because I've always produced pretty evenly from both before now - this is a new thing. I had heard of women for whom feeding from one breast exclusively was the only possibilty for them, but usually that was the case from birth.

I guess weaning is a big food milestone - maybe it's that?

It's also possible that it's just a one off blip. Are you double or single pumping?

beanlet · 18/02/2011 18:46

Single. I'll start him off on the left then and see if that helps!

Ah right. It could easily be nothing. Ammount expressed isn't really an indication of supply.

Y' see if for some reason (could be many things) you didn't get much milk from the left the first time you pumped today. Then went on to worry about it a bit and peer at how much what was coming out at subsequent expressing sessions then that'd probably be enough to significantly inhibit the letdown and amount you got...

I was able to efficiently decrease my yeald by anxious peering when pushed for time.

Does he feed as happily and for as long on the left as on the right?

Its you 'uber' boob!! I had this too and posted on here!! Totally normal for some reason!

beanlet · 18/02/2011 22:29

Grin love uber boob! When he was tiny he had a very slight twist to his neck due to his position in utero and therefore had huge problems latching on. The right side was worst to start off with, so we called it the therapeutic boob cos he had to exercise his neck muscles! Then I developed a hideous painful lump in the left breast, so the right one became easy boob. Maybe they just don't like being named?
