Teething pain when feeding?

NoTeaForMe · 15/02/2011 17:43

Hi

I think my baby is having teething pain, and sometimes made worse when feeding (though am not convinced it's not also because of milk drying up a bit) anyway, I give her bonjela but it says not more than every 3 hours. So what can I do in between? She has been getting very upset today and I'm not sure how I can help?

Thanks

Hi. Feeding can make teething pains worse because of the blood rushing to your dc's gums. I wouldn't recommend using teething gels before a feed as it can make it more difficult for your dc to latch on. I find it helps if I gently massage my dd's gums with a clean finger. I do this before feeds when teething is particularly bad. I also found the powders, ashton and parsons, great but had to stop using them as my dd has a milk allergy. As an aside...dentinox can be applied more frequently than bonjela but double check label as you don't mention your dc's age.

I find anbesol better than bonjela. It's a liquid so rubs on more easily/ doesn't slip off. I would 2nd Chamomilla/ teething powders too.

You could also sterilise a couple of teething rings and stick in the fridge. Or immerse clean muslin/ face cloths in boiling water, leave to cool, squeeze out then freeze in a tub for DD to chew/ suck on.

I find the above all helped DS1 through 9 months of nightly teething hell. The only thing that took the pain away completely was painkillers though. Although we didn't like at much, he ended up on nightly doses of paracetamol or brufen, or both if he was really bad.

We go for dentinox plus paracetamol for the really bad nights. You can give a second dose of dentinox after 20 minutes, just make sure you don't coat the tongue (which would make it a bit numb)

You are using children's bonjela, not adults aren't you?

Thanks all. She's 4 months so it's teething pains in the gums rather than a tooth about to appear I think!

Yep, childs bonjela. I've been giving it to her after a feed as it doesn't seem to hurt after every feed, I don't want to give it if she doesn't need it. If I give her bonjela and then 1-2 hours later she's in pain again can I give her calpol? I really don't want to give her calpol when not needed but today she has been in real pain. What do you think?

Thanks

I would give her calpol if she seems in pain. Why make her suffer unnecessarily? It will hopefully make her feed better, and maybe settle to sleep better too. There's nothing worse than toothache really. Sad

Try neurofen as its also an anti inflammatory. Calpol never did anything for him when teething

ethelina · 15/02/2011 22:11

Actually I agree with Jareth. Nurofen is very good for this.

Yes I would give the painkillers. Agree to go for the ibuprofen first as it can help with swollen gums. Paracetamol did work fine for us though so don't worry if that's all you've got.

Seriously, we agonised over it with DS1 but every time we gave the painkillers, 10 mins later he'd be fine. That was our PFB- DS2 (4months too!) has had health problems so has already had morphine and all sorts of drugs. It seems like nothing at all to give him a bit of paracetamol. So don't worry.

Thanks all, i've only got calpol and we're out all day tomorrow so I'll make sure I take it with me! Fingers crossed all will be well!
