Breastfeeding after IV midazolam

I have done searches but it all seems so contradictory. Please reassure me how soon after I can feed ds.
My appointment is at 9am and he won't need feed til 8pm. He's 22 months. It will be fine to feed him right?

I'm jittery enough about the work I just need reassurance on this as I can't cope with a stressed ds and so stressed dh too.

Is this a sedative/anaesthetic?

solo · 14/02/2011 10:49

If it is, I had anaesthetic when Dd was 2.6 and fed her as usual that evening.

Yes is is sedative.
Having teeth out Sad

thank you for the reply. I am calming

I have to admit I hadn't thought about the implications til this morning having had weeks. My appointment is wednesday and then of course I panicked.

Well, I'm not aware which anaesthetic I had, but it was for an op and I was completely knocked out. I think they did say I should leave it for 24 hours, but my Dd would never accept that, so I drank plenty of water and fed her as normal.

I had IV Midazolam (along with fentanyl) for an endoscopy procedure after a gall bladder op went wrong and they lost a stone and I had so much they couldn't give me any more (last person that had had that much had a cardiac arrest on the table) and I still kept coming round!

I got told 24hrs before I could bf again (student Drs relying on BNF) and I insisted they check Hale's Medications & Mother's Milk which had 4 hours as the refrain from nursing time. I didn't pump and dump either before feeding. DD3 was 9m old at the time (DD2 didn't feed until I was home from hospital)

Lactmed has 4 hours as well here but that is for IV dosing if you have it orally there is no waiting period before feeding providing baby is 2m+ and as yours is 22m....

Good luck with the op and I hope it goes well.

HI!
Im a dentist and gave midazolam to a woman BF last week. Yep the BNF says 24 hrs, and so that is what I officially told her and wrote in the notes- but like alcohol, surely the problem is when it is at its peak in your bloodstream when you are sedated ( 45 mins ish), rather than the potentially longer term amnesia and impaired reactions.... ie up to 24 hrs when you need to be in company to avoid doing anything silly like shopping online etc
I would also just advise that if you do feed make sure you have someone else in the room for 24hrs as you may fall asleep.

I hope the teeth come out really simply... ( just a thought... did you consider using nitrous oxide as a sedative? it is safer...)
