12 week EFF screaming during feeding HELP

My 12 week DD is EFF with Dr Browns bottles, level 1 teats and 1 dropper of infacol as she was a colicky / windy baby when younger.

Until 6 days ago she fed well, taking 5 x 6oz over 12 hours and sleeping all night.

I can't think of anything which has been changed but she now feeds for about 5 mins then screams and pushes the teat from her mouth. She continues screaming (v loud, bright red in face, inconsolable) until you stop trying to feed her i.e. lie her down on her mat etc when she immediately starts smiling.

We initially wondered if there was a positional element and she does seem to feed better if a bit more upright but she is not at all distressed when lying down immediately after feeding an dis not a "pukey" baby.

We have tried different bottles and also tried faster teats (both Dr Browns and other bottles) with no benefit.

If we stop trying to feed her for 10 mins then try again she will take a couple more ounces and if we stop for a further 10 mins she may take a third small feed and so manage most of her bottle.

At night she tends to feed "normally".

She doesn't have any obvious teeth coming through.

Any thoughts about why she has suddenly started screaming while feeding and what we could do to get back to undistressed feeding?

Are you absolutely sure she hasn't got any teeth coming through or a sore mouth?

shoppingstar · 13/02/2011 17:30

No, but I can't feel or see anything obvious.

I wondered if it was teeth but then I thought she might want to chew on the teat as she seems to want to chew on her hands a lot?

sorry shoppingstar=FraughtFeed !!

JiltedJohnsJulie thanks for your reply. Once I'd sorted out my failed name change Wink I rechecked her gums and she may indeed have an upper front tooth appearing which I had missed. I see from googling that lots of LO go off their feeds if teething. I guess I'll be out shopping for teething powders tomorrow . . .

I found the Dentinox teething gel to be good. Hope you have better luck with her feeds today Smile

Oh, and don't worry about missing the tooth coming through, I did it with both and I even managed to not notice DS could read Grin
