DS is 5.5 months and ebf, he has a D&v bug at the moment and the doc suggested water as well as bf. Bug seems to be easing off now anyway, but am I right in thinking there is no real need to give water? he's not maasively dehydrated, something is obviously staying down a he is weeing a bit.

i would say if he's still weeing and his fonterelle doesn't appear to be much more sunken than usual (sign of dehydration) then just keep breastfeeding and don't worry about water. If the bugs easing off too he'll need to refuel after a dip in energy so water will just fill a tummy in need of nutrition...does that make sense? Hope he's on the mend poor mite X

thanks that was what I thought milk is only fluid whereas he'll need extra things. he's fast asleep on my lap, I am having lovely cuddles Grin

ah glad to be of reassurance - ts rubbish when they're ill, especially when you get advice that makes you doubt your instincts - enjoy those cuddles Smile

He's woken up and is a much happier boy now so hopefully it's nearly gone.

my 6.5 month old had this too and when I took him to the GP he told me to ease off on the solids and just breast feed him as often and as much as he liked "because nothing can be better for him than mummy's milk!" I thought it was a lovely thing for a GP to say, he is an older guy as well Grin

I found the dreaded dummy to be very useful. If DD had a "full" feed, she would invariably bring it back. So the dummy helped inbetween little & often breastfeeds - just 3 or 4 minutes at a time. Was hard though - she was ravenous Sad

Hope it's gone for you Cosmosis.

Sad

This is when you earn your BF/Mum spurs - it is truly dreadful. I remember feeding her & vomiting, feeding & vomiting, over & over again like some kind of nightmare.

Keep drinking if you can. Catching the bug yourself is a bit unavoidable I found Sad

I really, really hope you feel better soon...

Cosmosis · 14/02/2011 12:53

Yes I figured there was no way I could avoid it. Changing is nappies is somewhat of a challenge atm I have to say!

Gosh yes - i remember doing it as close to the loo as possible because of unexpected hurling...
Plus the smell is something quite awful isn't it? I'd often wondered how you could tell if a breastfed baby had the squirts, given how lquid DD's poos were under normal circumstances. And then I found out! A really quite indescribable smell Sad

organiccarrotcake · 15/02/2011 14:50

Don't say that - I've been cringing all week hoping it wasn't from us Blush.

Cosmosis · 16/02/2011 08:35
