What to do when it says 'not for nursing mothers' on the back?

I want to start a course of detox tablets to help me kick start some weight loss. Yes, yes, I know it's not ideal Blush but they have worked well for me in the past and nothing else seems to be working. I walk two Fast miles a day on the school run, I don't eat fatty naughty foods (ie I love my fresh fruit and veg) and I try and do some wii exercise when I get a chance. I don't have time to any more exercise, honest! So, self justification aside, I feel that trying these pills will help again.

Ds2 is 23 months old and bfeeds a bit for comfort at nap time in the morning and most nights has a little go too if he's rolled around and woken himself up. So he gets the majority of his nourishment from solids, not from breast milk, but he does 'consume' a small amount still.

It says on the pills that they are not reccommended for pregnant or nursing mothers but to what extent should I worry about this if the milk is not his main source of nourishment and the quantity he has is fairly low now. I'd imagine that they haven't tested the effects on nursing/pregnant women so need to have a disclaimer like this as well as warn people that it affects the quality of the milk?

What are your thoughts on this? Anyone science-ey or medical out there who can explain it to me? Should I just wait until he finally self weans?

Thanks :)

I wouldn't worry about it.

Loads of things say that because they can't be bothered to do the tests.

But then I am still waiting for DS2 to self-wean (he's 4 Shock) so have not been putting my life on hold!

What's in them?

kellymom has good info on herbs in bfing and breastfeeding network has good stuff on meds.

It probably means that one or more of the active ingredients is known to pass through into breast milk (or it's not known that it doesn't). This means your baby is ingesting some (amount very uncertain). Whether this matters depends on the ingredient - they will be thinking of babies

Thanks both of you for the replies.

Jamais - I'm inclined to not worry about it and get on with things, like you said, both because of the amount he gets and also because I' d feel awful if I weaned him just so I can lose weight Grin

Nickytwotimes - good idea, will get them now and check

That's what I thought, onimolap, that it is based on babies who are mainly dependent on the breast milk for nourishment.

The first ingredient I looked up is black walnut, which can decrease milk supply, so not a major issue, really, for us.

So far it's stuff like crabapples, clover, Burdock so am feeling good about it!

Some things can say that because they take things from your body so added to the baby taking things can leave you deprived.

Have you looked at LactMed?

WelliesAndPyjamas · 13/02/2011 11:13

Oh interesting point, will have to look in to that.

Off to google lactmed...
