Best Nipple cream without lanolin?

Dsis gave birth to a whopping 10lb-er on tuesday by emCS and is doing really well with bf, but has a blister already.

She is allergic to lanolin - so Lansinoh is out of the question. Any recommendations?

(also as a query - I always 'pop' any feeding blisters and apply cream for healing - what do you do?)

Earth mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter. :)

Kamillosan is fab.

BertieBotts · 10/02/2011 13:20

Kamillosan is really good.

BertieBotts · 10/02/2011 13:21

I don't know about popping blisters though - surely best to let them heal naturally?

I have an amazing one called Bio-Mam or Bio-sense something. ingredients are very similar to Waitrose baby bottom butter, so that might do the job too.

cheers!
Kamillosan has lanolin in it sadly :(

the nipple butter looks yummy!

My theory behind popping the blister is that is has to pop at some point..!

I'm allergic to lanolin so this was a problem to me. I use Mothercare Nipple Balm, it's brill. Very waxy and you can feed through it which is what I did when my nipples were sore in the early stages.

If she has a blister, it's possible breastfeeding isn't going entirely right. She should maybe call one of the hotlines, and get some help? (They tend to be better staffed in the evening/weekend. And if she calls from a landline, she'll hopefully get someone near her.)

SiameseCatWoman · 10/02/2011 19:25

Thanks. I think she's off to a bf clinic tomorrow if she can get her DH to drive.
I've never used a helpline - are they useful even if they can't 'see' the problem?

Yes, the helplines can do quite a bit of good - talking through how the mum can tell if the latch is good, talking to her about how to hold the baby etc.

Did she make it to a clinic?

gaelicsheep · 13/02/2011 21:20

Kamillosan contains lanolin (although my HV told me it didn't Hmm)

gaelicsheep · 13/02/2011 21:23

I totally agree that a nipple cream probably isn't the answer if there are blisters. That sounds much more like a latch problem of some description. Plus IME nipple creams are next to useless anyway. I always rub in a little breastmilk after feeding - much better, for me, than any cream.

This is from the Lansinoh web site wrt allergies:

Allergies
It is rare, but lanolin allergy does exist. Sensitivity to
lanolin is due to an allergen found in the free alcohol
portion of lanolin. Lansinoh?s unique purification
process eliminates the risk of allergenic reactions by
reducing the free alcohol proportion to below 1.5
percent in combination with detergent levels below
05 percent (Takano et al). At that level, clinicians.
were unable to elicit a single allergic response
in lanolin-sensitive patients (Clark et al). In fact,
the name ?Lansinoh? is derived from lanolin, and
the words and symbols combine to mean ?lanolin
without alcohol.? ?LAN? is for lanolin, the Latin word
?SIN? means ?without?, and ?OH? is the chemical
symbol for ?alcohol.?

Same as NikkiTwinkle - I found the Mothercar one to be fab. Haven't got any to hand though so can't be 100% sure its lanolin free...
