Aptamil closest to breastmilk... who says?

So many people have said this to me, MW's, mum, MIL, SIL, friends...

Whats the source for this statement as obviously there are no formula ad's. Its starting to annoy me that people are repeating this to me as 'advice'. Unless theres a study to prove it, its just hearsay!

Anyone know where it originated?

It's not as nice as bm, I tried some SMA and whilst not actively disgusting, it has a repellent powdery texture.

Human milk is nicer: sweeter with less 'body' than cow's.

I took some of mine into my peer support training the other week as some people haven't seen bm before.

They didn't have a swig or anything, just looked at it.

The UHT carton milk is much nicer than the powdered milk.

MosEisley · 09/02/2011 23:37

7 month old DS3 tried Aptamil for the first time today and he certainly didn't think it was close to breastmilk. He just spat it out and refused to feed.

So my plan to sneak one formula feed into his hitherto only breastmilk routine has failed.

That is a good point about the UHT carton milk. Maybe I'll try that next time.

mrsgordonfreeman · 10/02/2011 14:15

Oh, it was the carton I tried. I also tried Wysoy once, that was very much like coffee creamer and was not so bad.

porcamiseria · 10/02/2011 21:45

i think its BULLSHIT, agree mktg people!

even tho I BF, it annoys me so much I use cow and gate instead

PickleSarnie · 10/02/2011 22:19

Oh goodness. I bf but give the occasional bottle of formula and give Aptamil for all the reasons above. Feel a bit of a fool now for being suckered in so easily!

MoonUnitAlpha · 10/02/2011 22:24

Aptamil and Cow&Gate are the same company though porcamisera.

FunnysInTheGarden · 10/02/2011 22:28

with both my babies, Aptamil was the only milk they would tolerate. SMA gave them both an upset stomach, so from my perspective Aptamil was the next best thing to breast milk

mrsgordonfreeman · 11/02/2011 08:51

The 'next best' is still a long long way from breast milk though. 'Least worst' is more accurate.

I think it currently says 'best infant milk' playing on the 'breast is best' canard.

MoonUnitAlpha · 11/02/2011 09:12

"Best processed powdered cow's milk suitable for infants" doesn't sound quite so appealing though Grin

mrsgordonfreeman · 11/02/2011 10:58

I dunno, the right font and a cuddly bear might tip the balance.

Oh, I'm not against formula but I wish there was more regulation of the packaging and marketing.

Like: 'formula, it's all pretty much the same, prepare it properly and your baby will be fine.'

tiktok · 11/02/2011 11:02

Yes, Aptamil says 'best infant milk'.

Confusingly, SMA also says 'best infant milk'.

Cow&Gate says 'now even closer than ever to breastmilk'.

Hipp is 'formulated to be nutritionally close to breastmilk'.

mrsgordonfreeman · 11/02/2011 11:06

'Closer to breastmilk than Carnation evaporated milk?'

Apparently that's what MIL was told to give DH as a baby. That and pilchards.

MosEisley · 11/02/2011 11:28

Pilchards?! To be fair to aptamil, it is almost certainly closer to breastmilk than pilchards are.

Yuk. Does your DH like pilchards now?!

TittyBojangles · 11/02/2011 11:34

There you go,... the next marketing campaign for Aptimil "closer to breastmilk than pilchards" Grin

mrsgordonfreeman · 11/02/2011 14:35

I think that's something we can all agree on.
