Poor advice in Mothercare BF leaflet

Pilchardnpoppy · 07/02/2011 12:34

I was feeding dd in a Mothercare bf room the other day and happened to pick up a breastfeeding leaflet. Most of the advice was fine, but some of the advice concerned me. It says things like:

"Your baby is not feeding well if: he falls asleep at the breast but then wakes anc cries when you try to settle him, his nappies are dry or his urine is concentrated or smelly, his weight gain is poor. If so, try expressing your milk with a pump - this lets you check your milk supply"

"Your baby is feeding well if he generally lasts 3-4 hours between feeding again"

"You might need: a good book on breastfeeding e.g. 'What to expect when you're breastfeeding, and what if you can't' by Claire Byam Cook.

Am going to email them to ask whether they could change some of this advice. I wondered whether anyone else could contact them too as we might have a better effect in numbers.

WTF??? If I went by that I'd think we had serious issues but DD is healthy, gaining 8oz a week and sleeping 6-7 hours a night at 8 weeks! Hmm

thats awful - prob sends new mums into a terrible spin!!

PenguinArmy · 07/02/2011 22:32

That's terrible. Make sure you link in some relevant articles though.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 07/02/2011 22:35

Does the leaflet have details of the (free) bf helplines? That would be more conducive to sorting bf problems than a book by CBC imo.

And if your baby is getting dehydrated - surely you;d be better off contacting your midwife rather than faffing about witha breast pump?

tiktok · 07/02/2011 23:36

That's very poor information - was this a Mothercare branded leaflet?

Who produced the leaflet?

Most mothers are not able to build up and sustain a milk supply feeding as infrequently as they suggest - it's quite wrong to use this as a sign of feeding well. And of course using a pump to check milk supply is very misleading.

If you want more people to email and tell them, you will need to give the title of the leaflet.

I think this is the leaflet. It's from the Mothercare website.

It is a Mothercare leaflet, but I don't see any mention of the book Confused

I does give the bad advice about expressing though Angry

The website does have a page about breastfeeding, and they recommend getting books, but not the one the OP said. The page is here

Pilchardnpoppy · 08/02/2011 18:15

Hi Browneyesblue,

Yes that is the leaflet. The one I have is a paper copy of that and it there is another bullet point underneath the one about thermal gel packs that says: a good book on breastfeeding like Claire Byam Cook's.

Hi Tiktok - yes a Mothercare branded leaflet titled: Breastfeeding - helpful advice on breastfeeding your baby. My 10month old is currently tearing up for me - she doesn't like it either!

Maybe it's an older version of the leaflet that's online - I really hope it isn't a new one though!

I will definitely contact them about the bad advice they are offering - thanks Pilchard :)

AngelDog · 08/02/2011 21:50

OP, could you post what you send them? Then others of us can copy adapt it and contact them as well?

AngelDog · 08/02/2011 21:50

I mean post on here, of course, not put in the post...
