How many breastfeeds does your 10.5 month old have a day?

Dalrymps · 07/02/2011 09:29

Ds is 10.5 months old and ebf. I never thought I'd get this far, my goal was to make it to 6 months. I'm glad I've managed to feed him for this long but kinda have a year in my head as the point I want to wean him off, at least in the day.

At the moment he has 3 meals a day and snacks and about 4 bf during the day. At night is random, still not sleeping through, can be anything between 2 bf and 4.

I've been letting him practice with a tommee tippee free flow spouted cup once a day with a little milk in. He drinks a little bit then plays with the cup or throws it Grin

Anyway, I'm just interested to know how many feeds other 10 month olds have. Also anyone who had managed to wean on to a cup, any tips?

He is small or age, bottom centile just like my 1st son so I am anxious to make sure he gets enough calories/milk one way or another.

When DS was that age he had three feeds a day - first thing in the morning, mid afternoon and just before bed. We night weaned at about seven months so none at night by that stage.

He had water with meals.

Rhian82 · 07/02/2011 09:35

Ooh, he was quite small as well, 9th percentile for most of his first year.

Cyrli · 07/02/2011 09:45

Same here - morning, mid afternoon and bedtime feed but if he's looking for a bf another time of the day he sometimes has an extra one. He stopped night time feeding at about 8 months. I weaned my first child at about 13 months - she was down to two breastfeeds a day. She went on to take cow's milk from a Tommee Tippee spout cup.

Dalrymps · 07/02/2011 10:00

Ah thanks, I think I'm worrying of I cut down the feeds he won't compensate by taking the milk from a cup.. He eats most things but will not be spoon fed so just eats it himself. Maybe he'll up his food intake a bit?

Also, any cups you had more success with than others?

Hooray and Wine that you (and I) have bf for so long! :)

DD was only feeding once during the day and then at 6.30, 11pm, 3 and 7am until we I night weaned recently and now she has significantly upped her day time intake, to 4 feeds and 3 meals and snacks! I need to day wean and intend to start this week. She is very good drinking water from any cup but seems to just throw warm milk around. Apparently she drinks milk ok at nursery - I forgot to ask if warm or cold.

So I'm going to offer milk in a cup at snack time this week and not offer but not refuse boob either. Hopefully we'll just be feeding at 6.30 and 11 then, and maybe if she wakes before 6am.

Hope that helps x

Hi my dd is 10 months and usually has 3 breastfeeds per day at 6.30am, 10.30am and 7pm. Solid wise, she has breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and supper. She will occasionally have an afternoon breastfeed but not often anymore. She stopped taking her 2.30pm feed herself but still seemed hungry so I introduced a snack which she devours. During the night varies. She sleeps through alot now but will occasionally waken once for a feed. Thinking of trying to do night weaning soon as I'm returning to work.
I introduced my dd to a sippy cup at 4 months. She has water out of a cup at every meal and can drink out of the cup on her own. If I'm away she still has milk from a bottle but I plan to use a sippy cup from now on if I'm away for any length of time. I just use the basic tt cup.

Dalrymps · 07/02/2011 19:06

Hooray indeed Siamese GrinWine

Ah so offering milk and neither offering or refusing boob, I see, good plan.

Haverina- ah thanks for the info, he usually has 3 meals and a snack but I'll be interested to see if he eats even more once he drops feeds..

So far the milk I have offered him in a cup has just been cold. Thought if he'd drink that it'd be more convienient.. Will maybe try warm and see how he gets on though.

Oh and tips for using cups, the only thing I can suggest is that you have the sippy cup around all the time. This really helped us. We started with water initially so that it didn't matter if it got spilled. Now my dd will drink anything out of a cup. As I said above, usually if I'm away she will have expressed milk in a bottle but in the past I have given her expressed milk with her meals in a cup when she has been striking!

SiameseCatWoman · 07/02/2011 19:42

Just incidentally, are you going to wean on to cows milk or formula? I've been using cows milk because it is so infrequent, but not recommended as main drink till 1yr. But we're nearly there I guess..

PenguinArmy · 07/02/2011 22:20

Yours sounds the same as mine including frequency and weight.

Sorry no additional advice, but I try to be chilled out about it all. We offer an open cup when she's in her high chair. Once she's drank about half then she chucks it everywhere.

Just remember that milk is the most calorific thing. DD doesn't have milk during the work day and she has started eating a bit more solids, but I then let her catch up as much as she wants at night so some people consider it a high price

ecobatty · 07/02/2011 22:28

Ds2 is about the same. He will drink from a glass but a sippy cup is just hopeless atm.

He's pretty chunky though, must be around 75th percentile or so.

Dalrymps · 08/02/2011 09:27

Siamese- just gonna wean on to cows milk. That's what I've been letting him practice with cause he's still getting a lot of bf and he probably only drinks an oz of it if that. I figure it's not his main drink yet and by the time it is he'll be over a year.

He drinks water fine from a sippy cup and even tastes out of open cups when we have them. Not happy with a bottle but I don't really want to start the whole bottle thing now anyway.

Has water with every meal and I try milk at his aft snack...

7 in the day and 2-5 at night at that age. 3 meals but no snacks.

Doidy cup was a winner.

Dalrymps · 09/02/2011 13:37

Ah thanks angel, that's quite close to ds then. Will have to dig out the doody cup and try it.

DS2 is just 11 months and tends to BF 6am, 10am, 1pm and 7pm (ish Grin).

i'm going back to work in 2 weeks, so trying to cut out the 10am bf, but it works so well for getting him sleepy.

porcupine11 · 09/02/2011 13:44

DS2 is 10 months this week and has around 4 BFs in the day (though doesn't seem to mind too much if one is missed) and 3-4 during the night which I really, really want to stop.

In the last week he's started drinking a little more from a Tippee cup without it dribbling down his chin, so now I know that he can drink from a cup if he wants and will have to when he starts nursery 2 days per week in 2 weeks.

Those of you who have night weaned at 10 months, please could you tell me how you did this/how long it took before your DC forgot about the feeds and adjusted? I'm dreading this as it's going to play havoc with my work deadlines/tiredness.

sheeplikessleep · 09/02/2011 13:55

porcupine - we did a combination of cuddling to sleep, then cc about a month ago, when ds2 was 10 months.

dh spent about 2 weeks cuddling ds2 to sleep when he woke during the night. one time it took 2 hours. as ds2 was calming down, dh would put him in the cot, then pat his back. he'd pick him up again if he got very distressed. he made sure ds2 was put back in cot awake.

then, when he wasn't being fed, we did cc. that took 10 minutes, longest time.

AngelDog · 09/02/2011 14:05

Porcupine, 10 months can be a difficult time to mess with nights because of the developmental spurt at 46 weeks which can cause frequent waking. I'd try nightweaning but be realistic that it might not stop the night waking till you get past 46 weeks.

It's basically the second half of the 8-11 months sleep regression (more info here, here and here).

porcupine11 · 09/02/2011 14:10

Oh dear I'd only heard of a 9-month sleep regression and thought we were past that! Not so fussed about night waking as such, but I don't want it to always have to be me sorting it out, so feeding must stop I think. Also I want to get my periods back so I can TTC. It seems that if I feed him once during the night he'll expect feeding the other times too, so the only solution is to go cold turkey... I'm not sure DH will be up for 2 weeks of broken nights though, eek.

Dalrymps · 09/02/2011 19:25

Interesting info on the sleep regression. Ds is definitely doin a bit of this although hard to tell cause his sleep is terrible anyway! He keeps waking and rocking on his hands and knees cause he's just learning to crawl.
