DD crying at breast - reflux or just teething?

My 14 week DD has started getting really fussy at the breast. She'll drink for a while and then break off so I'll wind her but then when I try and put her back on she gets agitated and screams and cries. I'm sure she hasn't had enough but can't get her to take any more. She's been spitting up a lot more lately and sometimes wakes up screaming. I'm just wondering whether it could be reflux - can it come on suddenly? She's also teething and having a lot of problems with it so wondering if it could be that? We've tried giving her a bottle but she's not a fan. Any ideas welcome as it's really distressing for all of us. Thanks.

Hi Dreemagurl, I have no advice, but lots of sympathy - have just posted a similar thread. It hadn't occurred to me to link this to teething, as DS is only 12 weeks, although he is also chewing his fist all the time and dribbling a lot. Isn't this a bit young for teething [ignorant about babies emoticon]? Anyway good luck, I know how hard this can be. DS won't take a bottle either.

Hiya

My 14wk old son has been doing exactly this and I wondered if it was reflux too (I have had reflux problems in the past). He'll latch on, thrash about, gulps loads of air and makes himself so uncomfortable. I came to the conclusion that he doesn't have reflux though because he doesn't do it at night when he's half asleep. So I just figured that he's getting interested in what's going on around him plus probs a bit of teething. If he does fuss too much I end up just putting him down/giving him to his Dad for a while and walk away to calm us both down and then try again after a bit.

Or if I know he's gone too long without a feed I hold him in to me like I was going to feed him and let him suck on my pinkie until he calms himself, then surreptitiously sneak the nip in.

These work for me at least...

Nightmare Dreemagurl. I had similar after DS had cold and seemed to have negative associations with bf as he hadn't been able to breathe when feeding. Really got me down. Found info that helped me - he would feed if I was walking around the room holding him, or if I swayed. He's too heavy for that now! I feed him with me lying down. I have strong flow that he splutters on when I have a let down, so lying down means gravity stops this being so bad.

Good luck - I know it can be horrible.

Thanks all for the replies. Will try the calming and feeding again - she does get very easily distracted now and night feedings are fine - she hardly wakes up. pidgin it's not unheard of to be teething this young - my DD has been teething since 6 weeks. Thanks again :)
