Still not sitting comfortably- miserable

Hi

I'm struggling :-(

Ds is 19 weeks old and 91st centile for weight and height, so pretty big and heavy....

I'm finding feeding him while out really difficult because of his size and we are hardly seeing anyone, or doing anything.

I have posted before about feeding out and about and got loads of helpful ideas; but having tried them I've not found a comfortable way of sitting and feeding anywhere other than my sofa and even that isn't great. I'm getting back and neck pain. Ds feeds for 50-60 minutes so I can't grin and bear it, my hands or foot go numb in minutes! It isn't just me getting uncomfy, when we are out, ds does too and we both get sweaty and he's bobbing on and off crying because hes uncomfortable (and then gets distracted which is another matter...)

I don't really want to stop bf yet but I'm turning down most invites with my mum friends and not bothering to do anything with dh or dd at the weekend because feeding anywhere else is so miserable.

He rests his bum on my left leg and turns to feed from my right breast, supported by my right arm and vice versa. But this does require particular seating and a big cushion and a footrest.

Sorry for the long post. It's really getting me down :-(

How can position/holding be made easier? Any suggests v gratefully received!

I found crossing one legs ankle onto the others knee so that ds was resting along my leg worked well

My son is 20 weeks old and also tall and heavy. When we are out, he finds it easiest if I sit on a normal hard chair and he sits on my knees with his legs wrapped around my tummy, then he has access to either boob. Luckily for us he is a speed-feeder and pretty much done in 10 mins max. I don't know if we could maintain it for an hour Shock. Crossing legs like CMOT suggested also works if he's tired but again, we're only doing it for a few minutes.
If we are in a house then he lies sideways and sprawls his legs along the sofa.

Ethelina, 10 minutes! Lucky, lucky you! I just gave the sitting up suggestion a go and Ds's mouth was about 2 inches too high - I think he has a long body and mine is short with large-ish boobs. It seemed like a sensible idea though- I might just get a dining chair out and have a go at finding something maintainable- that would be a good approach perhaps!

CMOT yes one ankle crossed over is a good position but I can only sit like that for about 15 mins.

I think must be an oddly proportioned weakling! Thank you for the ideas! Just posting has made me feel a bit less miserable!

Think it works for us because I have a long torso so we seem to be in proportion at the moment. Grin I can't wait til he's stable sitting up by himself and a bit mobile, then hopefully he can find himself a good position and I can relax in a comfy coffee house chair for once.

hopingforanother · 03/02/2011 14:23

I think his lack of mobility does make it more difficult, he's the size of an older probably but not quite as strong.

Is 50-60 minutes a really long time to feed for? That's just what he wants - he does seem a bit lazy though tbh...

Older BABY!

Don't think 50-60 mins is unheard of at all. We must just be opposite ends of the spectrum. Wish mine would stop growing for a bit, he grew into and out of his 3-6 onto clothes in a month. I really hope the 6-9 month ones last longer.

ethelina · 03/02/2011 15:04

3-6 MONTH

hopingforanother · 03/02/2011 15:46

Yeah mine too, and I couldn't re-use much from dd either it all being adorned in flowers and pink stitching! I think 6-9 will fit him a while, the sleeves are a bit long and the trouser legs too. He was out of 3-6 at 14 weeks!

Maybe he will get quicker at feeding.... Maybe...

At least it gives you legitimate time for a lengthy coffee and cake session.

ethelina · 03/02/2011 15:55

Grin Envy

hopingforanother · 03/02/2011 16:01

That would be nice, but it's so fraught trying to sit him still and comfy that my coffee goes cold before I get near it, hence not bothering anymore.... Then I have to rush home because he's obviously still hungry.

It's all a bit rubbish, I'm in danger of actually becoming a hermit :-(

Sad thats no fun is it? Dont know the answer to that one. I have been known to feed in the car first and leave him sleeping for my coffee
