Sterilising and cartons

lumpybananapuree · 02/02/2011 20:41

We're going to Menorca for a week in June. Ds2 will be 10 months.

I've been trying to work out what to do re bottles, sterilising, formula etc. Just wondered, if the cartons of formula are sterile do i really need to sterilise the bottles??

I thought that sterilising is because of the powder and bacteria.

Any ideas?!

just boil you bottlesfor 5 mins the carton s of milk are ok

You don't really need to sterilise after 6 months. After that point babies are putting all kinds in their mouths.
Not sure if you're planning on taking cartons with you but they don't tend to sell them in Spain. Have a great hol!

Sterilising is to clean the bottles, so whether you use powder or ready made doesn't really make a difference. However, so long as you clean the bottles thoroughly with hot soapy water and make sure there is no milk residue, there is no need to sterilise.

We're all inclusive so won't have kitchen facilities. just washing in the bathroom sink, travel kettle etc!

KenDoddsDadsDog yes, was going to take them with us. We bought cartons in Turkey a couple of years ago for ds1 & it was like custard!

If you really want to sterilise then you can buy bags in boots that you fill with water and they have a tablet in them. Or you can also buy disposable botttles - Playtex ones are great from Amazon as they have bag type liners that take up no space.

Last couple of time we were away I used an electric steriliser for bottles, means no need for microwave or cold water basins sitting out. Then just used the kettle to make up bottles with powder as its much easier to transport than cartons. Plan on doing the same next month if I can find all the bits.

lumpybananapuree · 02/02/2011 21:10

KenDoddsDadsDog are the playtex ones compatable with avent bottles??

You buy the top and teat then the bag fits in. Will find you a link. Avent used to do them but they stopped.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 02/02/2011 21:23

This is the bottle and you also need to buy the liners You only need one teat bit.

Boots sell a cold water sterilising tub which is great - good size:

The bottles it comes with are useless, but you can easily fit the tub on the bench in a hotel bathroom. The use Milton tablets to sterilise. So easy.

I sterilise when on holiday, mostly because you don't know what's in the local water.

Lozza70 · 02/02/2011 21:33

You don't really need to sterilise after 6 months and hot soapy water should do it. If you don't fancy that maybe Milton tablets?

theborrower · 03/02/2011 09:09

Expensive maybe, but it might be worth considering the disposable bottles simply for ease, and I imagine these would be easier while you're travelling. I think they're called Steribottles and are made by Tommee Tippee.

lumpybananapuree · 03/02/2011 10:00

Thanks everyone. Not too bothered abot the cost cos I can spread it over the next few months. Think I'll try the disposable bottles. They seem the least clatty. Never thought of them!

You can get steriliser bags for microwave, know you are going all inclusive but are you sure you won't have kitchen facilities, I've been all inclusive 3 times with wee ones and had the kitchen bit. I wouldn't worry about sterilising at 10 months, I've taken mine away from about 7 months and always had a brillant time.

I bought a bunch of expensive Bibi disposable bottles - only to find that DS wouldn't drink from them (luckily I tried them out before we went away). I still have a few, don't know why I'm keeping them!!
